The Master of Arts in Christian Education

South Hamilton MACE Checksheet

The Master of Arts in Christian Education is a two-year degree program for persons who desire to prepare themselves for leadership positions in Christian education ministries in church and parachurch situations. Persons seeking to serve in pastoral ministries in the churches should complete the Master of Divinity program. The intention of the program is to help students grow in their ability to formulate a biblical philosophy of education, to understand the basic principles of the teaching-learning process and to develop specific competencies which are necessary for teaching, organizing and administering programs and for effective leadership in a variety of settings. The program is designed to enable students not merely to assimilate information but to communicate it effectively, persuasively and sensitively as well. The program also addresses students' needs to be theologically informed; to develop personally, professionally and spiritually; and to integrate theory and practice.

Degree Requirements

Students participating in this degree program must complete 20 courses with a grade point average of 2.0 or more and be present for graduation exercises.

Specialization Requirements

The program allows for the following major concentrations: General Education, Family Ministry, Youth Ministry, Children's Ministries, Christian Education Across Cultures, and Curriculum Development. Students with a major concentration in education at the undergraduate or graduate level or those who desire to concentrate in a specialized area may develop an individualized concentration of four courses in consultation with the director of Christian education programs. The student must submit a typed copy of the program outline to the registration office by the second reading week of the first term of study. This outline will serve as a program statement against which the student's progress toward graduation will be evaluated. When an individualized program has been approved, any changes require approval from the program director in consultation with the registrar through the petition system.
