Biography:

Dr. Wheaton came to Gordon-Conwell in 2015 from Seminario ESEPA in San Jose, Costa Rica. During twelve years as a missionary, he participated in the founding of Christ Bible Seminary in Nagoya, Japan, and taught Biblical languages and exegesis in a range of contexts, including Scotland, South America and the Caribbean. In Costa Rica, Dr. Wheaton taught Old and New Testament at ESEPA for five years, consulted for a translation project to bring the Word of God into the language of the Cabecar people of eastern Costa Rica, and ministered with his wife, Jessica, and five sons, at an orphanage in San Jose.

In partnership with United World Mission (Charlotte, NC), Dr. Wheaton is currently collaborating with several Church leaders in South America to develop a new approach to training for pastors in the region who lack access to traditional seminary education. The model under development aims to take full advantage of the ubiquity of the internet and of mobile devices to provide certificate level training in a live, virtual classroom environment.

Dr. Wheaton completed M.A.s in Old and New Testaments at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in New Testament at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. His research interests revolve around the Gospels in their Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts as well as their application in contemporary debate about the shape of morality in consumer society.
