Lutheran Studies Program

Gordon-Conwell’s multidenominational history reflects a longstanding commitment both to a theological orthodoxy and diversity. In recognition of this commitment, Gordon-Conwell—Charlotte offers a Lutheran Studies Program to equip Lutheran pastors and laypersons for Kingdom service.

Program Overview

The Lutheran Studies Program features graduate-level seminary training that is built upon the following foundations:

  • Theological
    The Lutheran Studies Program equips Lutheran pastors and laypersons to think theologically, engage globally and live biblically through academically rigorous and spiritually deepening training in Bible, theology and practical ministry.
  • Affordable
    All Charlotte campus students receive an automatic scholarship, making Gordon-Conwell—Charlotte one of the most cost-effective ATS-accredited seminaries in the nation. In addition, students in the Lutheran Studies Program are eligible for Gordon-Conwell’s innovative full-tuition scholarship program, the Partnership Program
  • Confessional
    Classes within the program reinforce Lutheran historical and theological distinctiveness dating back to its Reformation origins.
  • Orthodox
    As codified in Gordon-Conwell’s Statement of Faith, the seminary and the Lutheran Studies Program affirms the centrality of Jesus Christ and his Word.


Diploma in Lutheran Studies

The Certificate in Lutheran Studies provides Lutheran-specific courses that meet denominational requirements for those preparing for Word and Sacrament, Word and Service ministry and for those who seek to deepen their knowledge of Lutheran history and theology.

The DLS program is 30 credits (10 courses) in the following disciplines: (The CLS can be earned as post-graduate certificate or in combination with a GCTS degree program)

  • TH501 Intro to Theology I 
  • TH502 Intro to Theology II 
Ethics (3 credits):
  • ET501 Christian Ethics 
Church History (6 credits):
  • Church History to the Reformation
  • Church History Since the Reformation
  • CH695 Lutheranism in North America
  • CH645 Martin Luther and the Reformation
Liturgy and Homiletics (6 credits):
  • MC Introduction to Lutheran Liturgy
  • PR744 Proclaiming the Word of God: A First Course in Preaching (Lutheran Track)
 

Degrees

Gordon-Conwell offers two degrees with concentrations in Lutheran studies:

Master of Divinity (M.Div) with a Concentration in Lutheran Studies

The Master of Divinity with a Concentration in Lutheran Studies is ideal for individuals desiring to become ordained as a Lutheran pastor. Features training in biblical studies, Christian thought, practical ministry and Lutheran distinctiveness, the M.Div. is our most comprehensive degree.

Master of Arts in Religion (MAR) with a Concentration in Lutheran Studies

The Master of Divinity with a Concentration in Lutheran Studies is ideal for individuals desiring to become ordained as a Lutheran pastor. Features training in biblical studies, Christian thought, practical ministry and Lutheran distinctiveness, the M.Div. is our most comprehensive degree.
