GARTH
M. ROSELL, Ph.D.
Professor of Church History, 1978.
B.A. (Wheaton College); M.Div., Th.M. (Princeton Theological Seminary);
Ph.D. (University of Minnesota).
Dr. Garth M. Rosell is professor of Church History at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts.
Dr. Rosell taught church history at Bethel Theological Seminary for eight years before coming to Gordon-Conwell as Professor of Church History, Dean of the Seminary and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. In 1987, after serving as Academic Dean for nine years, Dr. Rosell decided to shift his primary focus from academic administration back to classroom teaching. While he continued for seventeen years to serve as Director of the Ockenga Institute and Chair of the Division of Christian Thought, his primary attention was given to teaching, research and writing. Among his publications are eight books and a variety of articles. These include the Memoirs of Charles G. Finney (Zondervan), which he co-edited with Richard A. G. Dupuis (a volume that received a Christianity Today book award and that Finney's most recent biographer called "the alpha and omega of scholarly work on Finney."); Commending the Faith: The Preaching of D. L. Moody (Hendrickson); American Christianity (Eerdmans), which he edited with Ronald C. White, Jr., and Louis B. Weeks; and The Parables of a Country Parson (Hendrickson), on which he collaborated with William Flewelling. He has just completed a new manuscript, The Surprising Work of God: How America's 20th Century Evangelical Awakening Became a Worldwide Christian Movement, and he was recently commissioned by the board of historic Park Street Church in Boston to write a history of the congregation as part of the celebration of its 200th anniversary in 2009. Dr. Rosell, who loves the classroom, regularly teaches seven or eight introductory courses and /or advanced seminars and hundreds of students each year. Three of his courses, including one "Course of the Year" selection, are available on-line, by CD or by tape.
While a student at Wheaton College (Illinois), where he majored in both philosophy and sociology, he was elected president of the Junior Class, president (both junior and senior years) of the Men's Glee Club and president (senior year) of the Student Council. While a student at Princeton Theological Seminary, he had opportunity to teach at a nearby prep school, to serve on the staff of three Presbyterian churches and to serve as Director of Counseling and Follow-Up for the Billy Graham Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. During his years as Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's Academic Dean, he had the privilege of helping to launch a variety of new initiatives and/or programs including the establishment of the Harold John Ockenga Institute and its various centers, the Doctor of Ministry degree program, several faculty development programs, the securing of regional accreditation (in addition to that provided by the Association of Theological Schools), the move from academic departments to three divisions, and the appointment of several new additions to the seminary faculty.
Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Dr. Rosell has ministered in local congregations and served on denominational committees. He is a member of a number of professional societies; has chaired accreditation teams for the Association of Theological Schools; has served on a number of boards; has chaired the Boston Theological Institute; has chaired the Selection Committee for the Faculty Scholarship and Research Grants Program; was a founding member of the In Trust magazine Editorial Council; was a recipient of the Towel & Basin Award; was twice selected by the senior class as the "Professor Who Has Had the Greatest Impact on our Lives;" has served on the national Advisory Committee of the Warren H. Deem Institute for Theological Education Management; has been a member of the faculty of the Case Study Institute; has served as a national consultant for Globalization in Theological Education; has served on the staff of the Lexington Seminar on Theological Teaching and Learning; and has lectured on a variety of college, university and seminary campuses.
Dr. Rosell completed the Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy at Wheaton College, the Master of Divinity and the Master of Theology degrees (the latter degree in Church History under Dr. Lefferts A. Loetscher) at Princeton Theological Seminary, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree (in American Religious History under Dr. Timothy L. Smith) at the University of Minnesota. Two years of study, at Fuller Seminary and the University of Edinburgh, contributed respectively to the two master's programs. His sabbatical studies have taken him to Oxford and Cambridge.
Dr. Rosell lives in Wenham, Massachusetts with his wife, Jane. They have two children, Karen and Robert, a daughter-in-law named Patti and a grandson named Timothy. Garth enjoys classical music, traveling and reading.
