Hamilton Campus Mentored Ministry Opportunities

Hamilton students generally find Mentored Ministry opportunities through personal networking. Recommendations from a home church or clergy, professors and/or fellow students often bear fruit and we encourage students to pursue these primary avenues, as well.

The following is a list of available Mentored Ministry opportunities with local and regional churches and ministries who have contacted us and are eager to have students work with them. All mentors listed here are fully approved mentors for Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Hamilton Campus. Click on a link to view each opportunity. (For the full, detailed description, please visit our office in AC 233.)

Please bear in mind that some but not all posted opportunities involve some kind of pay or stipend. Financial renumeration, though encouraged by the Mentored Ministry Office, is not a requirement of the Mentored Ministry program, nor do we encourage students' ministry selections to be based solely upon this criteria.

Finally, we ask that the student and church contact our office at 978-646-4119 if and when one of the following positions is filled, so that we may keep this list as up-to-date as possible. Thank you!

This position is accountable to the Senior Pastor as head of staff and will also coordinate with the Youth Ministry Committee and church shepherd leaders who oversee the spiritual growth of the staff member as appropriate. The goal of this position is to help develop and shape the student ministry program for junior high and senior high youth (grades 7-12). BEACON COMMUNITY CHURCH - WORSHIP TEAM LEADER
SITE: 28 Wellesley Road, Natick, MA 01760
PHONE: 508-740-3441
DENOMINATION: non-denominational
MENTOR: Pastor John Mury

PROJECT: The student will have the opportunity to lead a small worship team through Sunday adult contemporary services (10 a.m.) and weekly practice. He or she will have the chance to develop the vocal and instrumental talent on the team. This Fall we will start having one Sun. each month as a "Family Power Hour" where the children & adults will be integrated (cf. Northpoint Community Church - Andy Stanley). This would not require the student's input but would be an opportunity for a more creative outlet if desired.

On the 3rd Sunday each month, we have a “Kid Connection” service. Children are integrated into the first half of adult service in a miniature version of what Northpoint is doing. Northpoint’s 252Basics curriculum serves as a framework not only for the children, but for the adults as well. The desire is to create more parent involvement in the spiritual formation of their children. Drama elements feature recurring characters and video-based worship music. This service would not require the mentored student’s input, but could serve as a more creative outlet.

The student would also have the opportunity to try out other ministry responsibilities, including Sunday messages or small group leadership. We are in the process of beginning a youth ministry for our older children. The student would have great flexibility in choosing what avenues to pursue.

HOURS: Ten hours per week, with approx. 4 hours/week to cover worship responsibilities, 2 of which are on Sunday. Service is about 1 hour. The team usually practices for about 1 hour before service. Choosing songs and practicing during the week averages about 2 hours/week. If the student chooses not to participate in the Kid Connection services, then the 3rd week of each month would require 0 hours. Mentor generally meets with the student approximately 1 hour/week but "[I] have made myself available for much longer periods of time when it is helpful to the student. I enjoy discussing theology, ministry philosophy, leadership and other issues. I can travel to the student’s location for this meeting.

FINANCIAL: We are a small church and would cover travel costs and a small stipend. We would be glad to discuss meeting the student’s financial needs beyond that.

TIME FRAME: A Fall startup would be ideal but the timing is flexible.

OTHER: We were started by 2 pastoral interns from Willow Creek. While we do not share their size, we do share the philosophy of building a biblically functioning community, building relational bridges with the lost, and being open to experimenting with methodology. We desire to remove all barriers between the seeker and Christ – except the scandal of the cross. The two things that people comment most about our church are 1) the closeness of our community and 2) the quality of biblical teaching. Oh, and we have a lot of little kids.

COMMUTE: 50 minutes to one hour.
