Current Counseling Database Trials

Gordon-Conwell libraries are pleased to announce that several counseling databases have been made available on a trial basis through December 4, 2014. Please take some time and fill out the form below and give us your thoughts about these databases. You do not need to fill out the entire form. Feel free to skip through to databases of particular interest to your classes.

PsycBOOKS


Description: PsycBOOKS® from the American Psychological Association (APA), includes over 38,000 chapters in PDF from over 2,500 books, published by the APA and other distinguished publishers, and includes digitized content of historical significance from the Archives of the History of American Psychology (AHAP) collection . It also contains over 1,600 classic books of landmark historical impact in psychology dating from the 1600s, and the exclusive electronic release of more than 1,500 authored entries from APA/Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of Psychology.

Who might be interested? This is a great database for finding both books and chapters with specific information relevant to nearly every GCTS counseling class. It is a good place to go when you want to find more reading for an annotated bibliography or sources for a research paper.  The full-text chapters provide instant sources, or you can use your search to request resources that are particularly relevant.

PsycCRITIQUES


Description: PsycCRITIQUES®, produced by the American Psychological Association (APA), is a database of full-text book reviews featuring current scholarly and professional books in psychology. It also publishes reviews from a psychological perspective of popular films and trade books, and includes approximately 40,000 reviews dating back to 1956.

Who might be interested? This database is a good starting point for finding more resources on a particular topic of interest, whether to fill the requirements of an annotated bibliography, or to find quality sources for a research paper.  As with PsychBOOKS, this database is useful in what books are worth requesting or purchasing for any of the counseling classes at GCTS.

PsycEXTRA


Description: PsycEXTRA®, produced by the American Psychological Association (APA), is a bibliographic and full-text companion to the scholarly PsycINFO database. The document types included in PsycEXTRA consist of technical, annual and government reports, conference papers, newsletters, magazines, newspapers, consumer brochures and more. It contains around 200,000 records that are not indexed in any other APA database.

Who might be interested? In this database, you can find real-world examples of publications such as newspapers, newsletters, conference catalogs, and more.  This is a good place to browse and become familiar with publication options as you consider crafting your own presentations and papers.

PsycTESTS


Description: PsycTESTS®, produced by the American Psychological Association (APA), serves as a repository for a growing selection of psychological tests and measures, including thousands of actual test instruments and test items that are available for immediate download and use in research and teaching. International in scope, PsycTESTS® also provides access to an increasing number of tests that are available in languages other than English. PsycTESTS® is an authoritative source of structured information about tests of relevance to psychologists and professionals in related fields such as psychiatry, management, business, education, social science, neuroscience, law, medicine, and social work. While focused on contemporary instances of test use, coverage spans more than a century.

Who might be interested? Particularly useful for students in Research Methods and Individual Appraisal, this database provides information on a wide variety of tests that are utilized in assessment and treatment.  Whether considering the appropriate use of a test in the evaluation of a research article or understanding the use of a particular test in treatment planning, this database provides more background information for making those judgments.  The database also provides information on the format, development, administration, and publisher/designer so you can gain a better understanding of the real-world applications and uses of various tests/assessments.

CINAHL Complete


Description: CINAHL®Complete is the world’s most comprehensive source of full-text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 1,300 journals indexed in CINAHL. This authoritative file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the CINAHL index, with no embargo. CINAHL®Complete is the definitive research tool for all areas of nursing & allied health literature

Who might be interested? This database is particularly useful for students in Psychopathology or Advanced Psychopathology. It includes psychological information regarding the various clinical disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, dementia, PTSD, etc. This database could also be useful for students in clinical rotations. In order to maximize the usefulness of this database, be sure to limit the search field to Psychology related articles. Otherwise, the results will be geared mainly toward the nursing/medical field.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments


Description: Health & Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI), produced by Behavioral Measurement Database Services, is a comprehensive bibliographic database providing information about behavioral measurement instruments. Information in the database is abstracted from hundreds of leading journals covering health sciences and psychosocial sciences.

Who might be interested? This is strictly a bibliographic database. While it contains no full text articles, this database is a great starting place for finding information on various assessment tools that are available. It would be most useful for Individual Appraisal.

MEDLINE


Description: MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 5,400 current biomedical journals.

Who might be interested? This database seems to focus strictly on the medical/biological field, though it may contain useful information regarding psychopharmacology or certain disorders.  It may take longer with this database to find information relevant to counseling.

Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print


Description: Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) provides users with a comprehensive guide to over 2,700 contemporary testing instruments. Designed for an audience ranging from novice test consumers to experienced professionals, the MMY series contains information essential for a complete evaluation of test products within such diverse areas as psychology, education, business, and leadership. All MMY entries contain descriptive information (e.g., test purpose, publisher, pricing) and edited review(s) written by leading content area experts. To be included in the MMY, a test must be commercially available, be published in the English language, and be new or revised since it last appeared in the series.

Who might be interested? This database is an excellent resource for researching assessment tools. The listings include the tests’ publishers, pricing, and a full review of each assessment. This could be useful in Individual Appraisal, Clinical Rotations, or post-graduation.
