Interlibrary Loan

The primary purpose of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is to help the Gordon-Conwell community access resources outside of its libraries' collections. ILL provides supplemental materials in order to help patrons access the best resources in any given field.

Who can use InterLibrary Loan (ILL)?

ILL services are available to all currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff at Gordon-Conwell’s four campuses (South Hamilton, Boston, Charlotte, and Jacksonville), if they are able to pick up and return ILL items at one of Gordon-Conwell’s four campus libraries.

How many items can a patron request through ILL?

Patrons are limited to 4 ILL items at one time. (This limitation is intended to make the volume of requests from all four campuses manageable.)

What types of items can be requested through ILL?

ILL’s purpose is to provide materials not available in GCTS libraries. No item that is owned by a patron’s campus library can be requested through ILL. This includes items only available in Reference or Reserves. For an item that a patron’s campus library owns but is currently checked out, a hold request will be made and the patron will have access to the item as soon as it is returned (maximum time waited would be 28 days).

How long does it take to get an ILL item?

ILL requests usually take 1-2 weeks to arrive. (If an item is owned by GCTS and is placed on "hold" the wait could be up to 28 days - the maximum checkout period.)

Is there a cost associated with ILL?

ILL services are free to all qualifying patrons. In cases where a library will only lend for a fee, ILL staff will contact the requesting patron before making the request to verify if the patron is willing to pay for the item.

Can ILL requests be monitored by patrons?

ILL requests will be visible on patrons’ library accounts. After an ILL request is made, the system will generate a “hold request” for the item in a patron’s library account. This “hold request” will have a status of “not ready” until the item is received by the patron’s campus library from the lending library. Patrons will be notified by email when an ILL item is available for pick-up at their campus libraries’ circulation desk.

Do I need my library card to pick up an ILL item?

Yes. Your ILL Item will be “checked out” to your account so you will need to bring your library card with you when you come to pick up your ILL Item.

Can items be renewed?

Some libraries are willing to grant ILL renewals. Renewal requests must be made through the ILL staff and not through a patron’s online account or through the circulation staff. You may contact the ILL librarian by email (ill@gcts.edu).
