New at GCTS Libraries

New Titles

The library continually adds new titles to its holdings. Monthly lists of the latest additions at Goddard are available here.

Christian Periodical Index Trial on EBSCOhost

The Christian Periodical Index, published by the association of Christian Librarians, indexes more than 130 English language periodicals. With coverage of journals from 1976 to the present, Christian periodical Index contains over 200,000 records including both journal articles and reviews. The journals included in the database cover a broad spectrum of knowledge including science, literature, medicine, political science, music, philosophy, history, sociology, nursing, and education. In addition to these subject areas, Christian Periodical Index covers all major doctrinal positions within evangelical Christianity.

This database is now available to Gordon-Conwell students, staff and faculty through EBSCOhost on a trial basis. You can access the database on the campus network or through CITRIX.

Theological Libraries Month - October 2007

“It’s a common belief that any day now, online resources will replace the library,”says Dennis A. Norlin, ATLA executive director. “It’s simply not happening." That’s why the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) launched this special month, to highlight the vital role library services play in the life of theological education.

At the Gordon-Conwell libraries, we find ourselves being increasingly pivotal as crucial information brokers for our patrons. Whether on-site in the library building or remotely, via email and instant messaging, our theological librarians save our patrons—faculty, students, administrators and even alumni--frustration and time. We provide expert guidance you can’t find anywhere else on how to navigate the newly available sources which are multiplying exponentially every year.

“Far from being obsolete, theological libraries are at their patrons’ service, offering more than they imagine,” says Barbara Kemmis, ATLA director of member services.

Take time this October and get to know your campus library. Get a feel for what we have to offer (both in print and electronic resources), and learn how to put it to good use!

GCTS Libraries Greasemonkey plugin for Firefox

Are you a Firefox user? Do you use Greasemonkey? Do you use Amazon.com and GCTS libraries often? If so, you may be interested in this browser plugin!

Now, a script is available for GCTS Library patrons that shows if GCTS has a particular book listed on Amazon.com. It adds a green line of text as shown in the screenshot.

You can see in the example that there are "4 of 4" copies of Serious Times "available at GCTS Libraries."

To use this script:

  1. Install Firefox (if it's not already installed).
  2. Install Greasemonkey.
  3. Install the GCTS Libraries Plugin.

Greasemonkey is a Firefox plugin that allows you to customize the way certain webpages display. Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at UserScripts.org.

CITRIX Online Databases

Full Remote Access with CITRIX

Now students, staff and faculty of Gordon-Conwell can access a host of both CD-ROM and online databases with CITRIX Electronic Resources. Access CD-ROM databases that were once available only on a few computers on campus in the comfort of your own home! You can also access the full range of online databases, such as ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials (ATLAS), Early English Books Online (EEBO) and the Biblical Archaeology Society Online Archive! Simply sign in to the CITRIX interface with your webmail/mydot login information at https://onlinedatabases.gordonconwell.edu. If you have any questions, contact the Library IT office.

Remote Access without CITRIX

Some online databases are available remotely without CITRIX. Instructions for accessing these databases are available to students, staff and faculty with valid library accounts. This option for accessing online databases remotely is particularly helpful for those patrons without high-speed internet connections.

Keep Track of New Items with Personalized RSS Feeds

FEED SHORTCUT:

Use these pre-made search feeds to monitor the subject of your choice.

Old Testament
New Testament
Theology
Church History
Psychology
Missions
Apologetics
Pastoral Ministry
Preaching
The library regularly updates its monthly list of all new titles. So, if you're looking for New Testament books, you'd have to scan the entire list for those particular books!

With RSS feeds, you can create your own list of new arrivals tailored to your own specific field of interest.

"Huh?" you ask, "What's an RSS feed?"

First, RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication." RSS is a technology that was first developed to allow internet users to grab news stories and plug them into their own websites and news readers.

Second, many people use RSS feeds, in conjunction with an RSS reader like Pluck, Google Reader, My Yahoo, or even their Firefox browser to easily keep track of multiple news feeds or even blogs. Now you can be updated with the latest holdings added to GCTS libraries in any RSS reader.

To do this, simply perform a search in the library catalog. At the bottom of the list of search results, you will find an orange, rectangular button, labeled "RSS" (see illustration). Right click this button and "Copy Link Location" if using Firefox or "Copy Shortcut" if using Internet Explorer. The copied link can then be used to create a "Live Bookmark" in Firefox or an RSS feed in any feed reader.

If you would like to know more about using this feature, contact the Goddard Library Reference Desk.

Here's a shortcut. Click one of the RSS subject links to the right to view the appropriate list of titles added in the last 30 days.
