North and South, Up and Down

DR. GINA A. ZURLO

CO-DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF GLOBAL CHRISTIANITY

We might sound like a broken record, but the biggest research finding from the World Christian Encyclopedia, 3rd edition is the continued shift of Christianity to the Global South. Only 18% of Christians lived in the Global South in 1900 but today, it’s 67%.

Another way to look at this is the countries with the most Christians over time. We’re beginning to jump on the data viz band wagon, so here are the countries with the most Christians from 1900 to today. You can see countries of the Global North (except the United States) move down the chart over time while Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and India climb upward.
