Cooley Center Fall 2017 Lecture: Dr. Don Fairbairn Focuses on the Role of Creeds
October 19, 2017
Mark your calendars for the Robert C. Cooley Center Fall Lecture: Tuesday, November 7, 2017. “From the Shema to the Nicene Creed: The Role of Creeds in the Articulation of Christian Orthodoxy”, with speaker Dr. Don Fairbairn, Academic Dean of GCTS-Charlotte and Robert E. Cooley Professor of Early Christianity.
Many Protestants are suspicious of creeds from the early Church, partly because we fear they may undermine the authority of Scripture alone, and partly because they do not seem to be consistent with our main emphasis, justification by faith. But in fact, creedal-like affirmations in the Bible itself gave the early Church its pattern for the articulation of creeds. The ancient creeds – especialy the Nicene Creed – served to articulate the continuity between Scripture and early orthodox Christianity. They also have more in common with the Reformation emphasis on justification by faith than we might have imagined.
