In Memoriam: Marge Kaiser
October 28, 2013
The Gordon-Conwell community is saddened by the loss of Mrs. Marge Kaiser, beloved friend of the seminary and wife of former President Dr. Walter C. Kaiser. Marge passed away in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on October 27 surrounded by her family.
Marge was well known for her generous, hospitable, cheerful and joyful spirit. She and Walt hosted a weekly Bible study in their home at the Retreat House on Gordon-Conwell’s Hamilton, MA, campus. An avid reader and lover of the Word, Marge developed character sketches of women in the Bible and would retell their stories in first person narrative form, often memorizing large portions of Scripture to stay in character.
Gordon-Conwell alumna and friend of the Kaiser’s, Lauri Haugen notes, “Some of my favorite memories from my years at Gordon-Conwell include mornings spent around the Kaiser’s kitchen table where I was nourished by God’s Word and Marge’s amazing caramel sticky buns. Walt and Marge were co-leaders in every way…God formed a great team when he brought [them] together. I admired Marge’s spunky questions and feisty sense of humor during the study…she often brought the theoretical home to daily experience with her insight.”
In the mid 90s, the Kaiser’s moved to Gordon-Conwell where Walt was appointed Colman M. Mockler Distinguished Professor of Old Testament, and later President. The Kaiser’s donated the hydrangeas that line the perimeter of the Goddard Library on the Hamilton campus, as well as the large chandelier in the Pierce Great Room.
Walt and Marge also dedicated much of their time to Cannon Beach Christian Conference Center on the Oregon Coast.
Marge leaves behind her husband, Walt, three sons, one daughter, four granddaughters and three grandsons.
Services are planned for October 29 and 30. Visit the Wenig Funeral Home website for more information.
