The Brown Bag Sabbatical - January 11-15, 2016

The Brown Bag Sabbatical is an invitation from the Ockenga Institute to bring your own project to Gordon-Conwell each January and join pastors from around New England and beyond for your own week-long study leave.

With a little help from us, you can enjoy the beauty of the Gordon-Conwell campus and take advantage of its resources. The Brown Bag Sabbatical offers a full plate of opportunity at a "brown bag" price.

The purpose of the Brown Bag Sabbatical is to provide an environment for pastors to have a week-long study leave. The program is minimally structured so pastors may utilize the seminary's resources to spend time studying, resting and as a personal retreat. Meet other pastors from around the country to share about ministry during our lunch roundtable discussions and interact with Gordon-Conwell faculty.

Program Highlights

  • Five days and four nights at Gordon-Conwell and a local hotel (single and double occupancy room options and continental breakfast)
  • Lunch and roundtable discussions with Gordon-Conwell faculty
  • Full access to campus facilities (library, media center, etc.)
  • Times of corporate worship and prayer
  • Coffee and snacks provided throughout the day


Program Details

Cost & Lodging:

Registration for the Brown Bag Sabbatical includes four nights at a local hotel, five lunches on campus, and coffee and snacks provided throughout the day. Single and double-occupancy rooms are available for the program. Please note that double occupancy is not guaranteed, but based on the interest of other participants.

If you need additional rooms beyond the four nights included (Monday-Thursday night), you must pay/per night in your registration. If you live locally but would like to participate in the sabbatical without the housing option, please register for the program-only option.

Please note that due to planning, registration with the housing option will close December 18, 2015.

Rates are as follows:

  • Early Registration (by 12/1/15) = $450/person for program and a single hotel room
  • Regular Registration (after 12/1/15) = $475/person for program and a single hotel room
  • Double Occupancy Rate (pending availability) = $375/person for program and a shared room
  • Program-Only Rate (no housing) = $125/person for program only
  • Extra Night at the Hotel (Single) = $88.50/night (includes tax)
  • Extra Night at the Hotel (Shared) = $148.00/night (includes tax)

The hotel for the 2015 program is the TownePlace Suites in Danvers, MA. Single occupancy rooms are studio suites which include a full kitchen, desk, sitting area and sofa bed. A traditional continental breakfast is included in your stay. Double occupancy rooms are 2-bedroom suites, with separate sleeping rooms and a shared living space.

If you are sharing a room and need to purchase an extra night, please designate one person to pay for the extra night ($148).

Confirmation & Cancellations:

You may consider your cancelled check or credit card statement to be confirmation of your registration. Event tickets will not be mailed. Online registrations will receive an email confirmation.

Due to the planning involved with the program, cancellations must be received by December 11, 2015 to receive a refund less a $20 processing fee. Cancellations requests received by December 23, 2015 will be refunded 50%. Cancellations made after December 23, 2015 will not be refunded.

Time, Location, Maps:

The program will take place at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Registration will be held on Monday, January 11, 2016 in Academic Center Room 351. Snacks are provided throughout the day in the Ockenga Atrium. Lunches are provided in the Dining Hall with the lunch discussions taking place in a Kerr building classroom.

Take Rte. 128 North (toward Gloucester) to Exit 17 (Grapevine Road). Turn left off of the exit ramp and continue past Gordon College. Take your first right onto Rte. 22 (Rubbly Road). Turn left at the first stop sign (Essex Street). The entrance to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary will be 200 yards ahead on the right. Follow Billy Graham Way to the Academic Center or follow the conference signs.

A Note about the Weather:

This program takes place during the winter in New England. There is a chance of inclement weather during the program. Please be aware that the program will continue as scheduled unless the Hamilton Campus of Gordon-Conwell is officially closed or has a delayed opening. In cases of school closure, we try to work with the hotel and with you to provide meals and to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Please be prepared to work in your hotel room in case of inclement weather.
