Dr. Schutz has served Gordon-Conwell since 1990, moving in 1994 to his current position from that of Director of the Doctor of Ministry program. He came to Gordon-Conwell from Bethel Seminary, where he had worked for four years as a professor and Associate Dean and later as Acting Executive Vice President and Academic Dean. He brings to his post at Gordon-Conwell much experience in teaching, administration, psychology, consultation and writing.

Dr. Schutz was a practicing psychologist prior to entering pastoral and teaching ministry, and he currently works as a clinical psychologist at A New Beginning Counseling Center in Ipswich, a private practice which he founded. His doctoral studies were funded by a research grant from the U.S. Office of Education to design instructional models for disadvantaged preschool children in the Watts area of Los Angeles. He taught psychology at Westmont College and later chaired the psychology department at Gordon College. While there, he obtained a research grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to understand and facilitate concentration during study. He later took an internship with the mental health department of the Lynn Public Schools in Massachusetts.

Dr. Schutz holds membership and certification in numerous professional organizations and is a professional mediator. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society. He is also a member of the American Psychological Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors, a Board Certified Professional Christian Counselor with the International Board of Christian Counselors and a licensed psychologist practitioner in Massachusetts and North Carolina.

Published in various secular and Christian journals, Dr. Schutz was for six years a contributing editor to the Journal of Psychology and Theology. He has worked as a consultant both within and outside the church, in organizations ranging from denominations and individual churches to educational institutions and governmental agencies, such as the Haverhill Youth Commission and the Agency for International Development in Washington, DC.

Dr. Schutz has pastored and planted a variety of churches, primarily in the Midwest. For three years, he was a home missions pastor for planting new churches for the Pacific Southwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church. While serving in this capacity, he planted five churches. He was recently ordained a priest in the New England Diocese of the Anglican Church in North America.

Dr. Schutz’s scholarly interests include evangelism, discipleship, church planting and growth, and pastoral care and counseling.

He enjoys mountain climbing, cooking, gardening and deep sea fishing.
