Scholarships and Grants

Gordon-Conwell's South Hamilton campus offers four kinds of scholarship and grant moneys to qualified students. Scholarships are awarded to students only at the beginning of their program of studies at Gordon-Conwell. If a student enrolls without a scholarship, he/she will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship at a later date. To learn more, select a category of scholarship/grant offerings.

Merit-Based Scholarships

The Admissions Office administers the following scholarships (other than the Pierce and the Gwyn Walters Preaching Scholarship). For more information, contact Admissions directly.

Applicants to the Seminary who have completed their application by February 1, 2011 will be automatically considered for the following merit-based scholarships: the Presidential Scholarship for Future Christian Leaders, the Rev. Timothy J. Keller Scholarship for Pastoral Ministry, the Dr. J Christy Wilson Jr. Scholarship for Missions Ministry, the Dr. David F. Wells Scholarship for Teaching Ministry, the Scholarship for Professional Counselors, the Military Chaplaincy Scholarship, the Michael Haynes Scholarship, and the Minority Student Scholarship.  Recipients will be notified by April 1, 2011. Merit-based scholarships are not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.

The Presidential Scholarship for Future Christian Leaders: “Every Sphere”
The Presidential Scholarship for Future Christian Leaders is a $10,000/year scholarship granted to one applicant for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  The Recipient of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for Christian leadership upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “advance Christ’s kingdom in every sphere of life” in service to the Church. The Recipient must have leadership experience and must complete the application for admission to Gordon-Conwell by February 1.  This scholarship is renewable each year of study. 

Dr. David F. Wells Scholarship for Teaching Ministry: “Think Theologically”
Named in honor of Dr. David F. Wells, longtime theology professor at Gordon-Conwell who embodies the Seminary’s commitment to academic excellence, the Dr. David F. Wells Scholarship for Teaching Ministry is a $7,500/year scholarship granted to up to three applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for teaching ministry and academic work upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “think theologically” in service to the Church.  Recipients must have received a GPA of 3.5 or higher at an accredited undergraduate institution and must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell by February 1.  This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study. 

Dr. J Christy Wilson Jr. Scholarship for Missions Ministry: "Engage Globally"
Named in honor of Dr. J Christy Wilson Jr., former professor of missions at Gordon-Conwell who faithfully served Christ in Afghanistan for 22 years as a missionary, pastor, and teacher, the Dr. J Christy Wilson Jr. Scholarship for Missions Ministry is a $7,500/year scholarship granted to up to three applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for missions service upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “engage globally” in service to the Church.  “Missions” is broadly defined to include both international and local missions, social justice ministry, urban or rural ministry and campus ministry.  Recipients must demonstrate experience in missions, must express a desire to engage in missions as a full-time vocation upon graduation, and must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell by February 1. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study. 

Rev. Timothy J. Keller Scholarship for Pastoral Ministry: “Live Biblically”
Named in honor of Rev. Timothy J. Keller (M.Div. ’75), pastor of New York City’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church, who has faithfully sought to communicate the truth of God’s Word for more than 20 years, the Rev. Timothy J. Keller Scholarship for Pastoral Ministry is a $7,500/year scholarship granted to up to three applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for pastoral ministry upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “live biblically” in service to the Church.  Recipients must demonstrate experience in ministry, must express a desire to engage in vocational pastoral ministry within the local church upon graduation, and must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell’s Master of Divinity program by February 1.  This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study. 

Military Chaplaincy Scholarship: “Every Sphere”
The Military Chaplaincy Scholarship is a $5,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award must be enrolled in the chaplain candidate program during their time at Gordon-Conwell and must express the desire to serve the Church as a military chaplain upon graduation from the Seminary.  The recipient must complete his or her application for the chaplain candidate program and to Gordon-Conwell by February 1. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study and can be combined with military scholarships and grants like the Yellow Ribbon Program and tuition assistance given to chaplain candidates.

Scholarship for Professional Counselors: “Every Sphere”
The Scholarship for Counselors is a $5,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for counseling ministry upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “advance Christ’s kingdom in every sphere of life” in service to the Church.  Recipients must have a degree in psychology or sociology, or must be a graduating senior planning to graduate with a degree in one of these fields.  Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell’s Master of Arts in Counseling degree program by February 1. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study. 

Michael Haynes Scholarship
Named in honor of Reverend Michael E. Haynes, longtime Trustee of Gordon-Conwell and pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, MA, this $8,000/year scholarship is available to up to five African-American applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate a commitment to serving the Church in an African-American context. Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell by February 1.  The Michael Haynes Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.  This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Minority Student Scholarship
This $8,000/year scholarship is available to one minority applicant for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate a commitment to serving the Church in an African-American and/or Latino context. Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell by February 1.  The Minority Student Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.  This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

The John and Lois Pierce Fellowship
The Pierce Fellowship is available to select incoming and returning students who demonstrate experience and ongoing commitment to small group leadership, spiritual formation, and disciple-building. Each member of the Fellowship will be mentored by the Pierce Center staff leaders and equipped in facilitating initiatives to accomplish the mission of the Center. The $1,500 annual tuition subsidy is combinable with other grants or scholarships and open to all degree programs except the Master of Theology.  Applications are accepted each spring for participation the following academic year starting in the fall semester.  Applicants for the Pierce Fellowship should submit the Pierce application by April 15, 2011.

Gwyn Walters Preaching Scholarship
Awarded to a returning Master of Divinity candidate with exceptional promise for a strong preaching ministry. The preaching faculty will nominate the recipient. The scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 per year and can be combined with other scholarships.

Ministry Scholarships

The Admissions Office administers the following scholarships (other than the Team Ministry Grant). For more information, contact the Admissions Office directly.

The Partnership Scholarship
Available to 50 new and current students of all degree programs except the MA in Counseling and the Th.M. degree, the Partnership Scholarship offers $9,000/year towards tuition (a tuition reduction of almost 60%). This scholarship enables the student to bring with them the kind of community and prayer support that is so crucial during the seminary years.  The Partnership Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.  Applicants for the Partnership Scholarship should submit their Partnership Scholarship application by April 15.  

Billy Graham Scholarship
Made possible through the generosity of friends of the Seminary and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the Graham Scholarship is available to the first 75 students who commit to full-time study by returning the enclosed Agreement form and scholarship deposit.  The Billy Graham Scholarship offers $4,000/year towards tuition and is awarded on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you must act soon.  The Billy Graham Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.  Available for all degree programs except the MA in Counseling. 

Trustee Grant
Named in honor of the Seminary's trustees who are committed to reducing the tuition cost for the student, the Trustee is available to full-time students who commit to full-time study by returning the enclosed Agreement form and scholarship deposit but do not receive the Graham scholarship and offers $3,500/year towards tuition (limited to 15 students).  The Trustee Grant is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.   Available for all degree programs except the MA in Counseling.

Team Ministry Grant
The Team Ministry Grant is a need-based scholarship available to qualified married couples who will be enrolling as full-time degree students (7.5 credit hours or more) and who are called to pursue seminary studies together. This scholarship allows for two students to study at Gordon-Conwell with one spouse receiving a fifty percent discount. The scholarship is only awarded to incoming students and is not available after either of you have matriculated at a Gordon-Conwell campus. A detailed description of current policies for the Team Ministry Grant is available.

Compass Leadership Scholarship
The Compass Leadership Scholarship is a $500 scholarship granted to those who have participated in the Compass Program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. In partnership with local church leaders, Compass seeks to identify and encourage high school students to consider leadership and ministry. Recipients of this scholarship have participated in the Real Ministry Immersion (RMI), demonstrated exceptional promise for ministry, and reflected the Seminary’s commitment to “advance Christ’s kingdom in every sphere of life.” Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell by February 1 and indicate on the application that they participated in the Compass program. The Compass Leadership Scholarship is combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships. 

Students who do not participate in the above programs may apply for general Gordon-Conwell grant funds that are awarded on a per-course basis (see below).

Need-Based Scholarships

Gordon-Conwell Grant
Your basic need-based award will be in the form of a Gordon-Conwell grant. Financial Aid applications are required for this scholarship. Scholarships and grant funds are made available to students through the generous gifts of many donors to our scholarship fund. Please see the current catalog or the current financial aid application packet for a complete list of the named scholarships that support and underwrite the Gordon-Conwell grant program. You will be notified during the first semester if one of the named scholarships is supporting your grant funds.
