Dr. Johnson has been a Research Fellow in the Study of Global Christianity and the Director of the Center for the Study of Global Christianity (CSGC) at Gordon-Conwell since 2003. In this position, he does research on the status of Christianity and world religions in every people, language, country and city. While under his leadership, the Center’s statistics have been frequently quoted in the media (recently ABC, BBC, Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Economist).
Dr. Johnson is widely accomplished in missions, evangelization and the study of Christianity. His Ph.D. work in developing quantitative tools to analyze the past, present and future of global Christianity has been put to fruitful use throughout his career, both at Gordon-Conwell and elsewhere. He is currently the editor of the World Christian Database located at www.worldchristiandatabase.org, which provides statistical information on Christianity worldwide. From 1994-2002, he directed the World Evangelization Research Center. From 1988-1989, he worked as a research associate for the Singapore Center for Evangelism and Missions. Other organizations for which he has worked include the US Center for World Mission, Youth With a Mission and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Dr. Johnson has also worked in numerous ecclesiastical posts relating to missions and evangelization. He is a member of the Lausanne Strategy Working Group as well as the Missions Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance.
Dr. Johnson is a member of the World Future Society and the World Network of Religious Futurists. He is the co-founder of the Christian Futurists Network. He is a member of the World History Association and a member of the American Academy of Religion.
Dr. Johnson is married to Tricia, and they have three daughters, Laura, Claire and Valerie. As a family, they enjoy bike riding, hiking, camping and international food. Dr. Johnson enjoys used bookstores, collecting music and film from around the world and cross-country skiing in the winter. For the past 20 years, Johnson has daily mined Christian history and global Christianity for insights into his own faith journey.

Dr. Johnson has had nearly 150 articles and statistical tables published in a wide variety of journals and encyclopedias. The journals in which he has been published include the International Bulletin of Missionary Research, Evangelical Missions Quarterly, Mission Frontiers and the International Journal of Frontier Missions. He is an annual contributor of religious demographics to Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Book of the Year and International Bulletin of Missionary Research. He has also recently contributed statistical tables on religion to Religions of the World, (4 Volumes, ABC Clio), Lexikon fur Theologie und Kirche, (Verlag Herder), New International Dictionary of Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements, (Zondervan), Religion in Geschichte und Gengenwart, 4th edition.
