Extensions and Withdrawals

Semlink at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

The office from which you request an extension for your Semlink course will vary depending on who you are as a Semlink student. Off-campus students (those who have not taken a class on any of Gordon-Conwell's campuses) should contact the Semlink office.  On-campus students, those who have taken a class at one of the seminary's campuses, should contact their home campus registration office.

NOTE:  Depending on your reason for requesting an extension, you may incur a grade penalty. You may not withdraw from a course after your original due date, even if you have been granted an extension.  Extensions cannot be granted after the course due date.

Off-Campus Students

You are an off-campus student if you have yet to take any on-campus classes. Once you have taken a single on-campus class, you are considered an "on-campus" student at that campus, regardless of your current location.

Withdrawals: Withdrawal requests must be made in writing, signed, and submitted to the Semlink office by the original course due date.  Note that it is not possible to withdraw from a course that is on extension.

Extensions: Extension requests for Semlink and Semlink+ courses must be made in writing and submitted to the Semlink office by the course due date.  The best way to submit extension requests is via email to semlink@gordonconwell.edu.

The extension request should include a statement of the circumstances that have prevented you from completing your course and the amount of time lost due to these circumstances, the amount of work completed on the course to date and the work for which you are requesting an extension. Extensions are considered on an avoidable/unavoidable basis. Generally, extension requests that are based on avoidable circumstances are granted with a grade penalty.

On-Campus Students

You are an on-campus student if you have taken a course on one of the Seminary's four campuses. Even if you are no longer living near campus or are no longer taking any on-campus classes, you are still considered an "on-campus" student.

Withdrawals: Withdrawal requests must be made in writing and submitted through the registration office on the campus at which you are registered (i.e., a Charlotte student would submit requests to the Charlotte registration office).

Extensions: Semlink+ courses (which are about 14 weeks long) are eligible for extensions on the same grounds as other courses (see Student Handbook for details).  However, classic Semlink courses are, by design, already extended beyond the length of a regular classroom course to allow for more flexibility (five-to-six months versus three-to-four months).  Therefore, classic Semlink courses are not eligible for extensions, even for unavoidable or unforeseeable circumstances.  It is expected that students use the extra time built into every classic Semlink to make up for any time lost during the course.  If a classic Semlink cannot be completed by the due date, then the student should withdraw from the course.

Requests for Semlink+ extensions must be made in writing and must be submitted through the registration office on the campus at which you are registered. The extension request should include a statement of the circumstances that have prevented you from completing your course and the amount of time lost due to these circumstances. Extension requests that are based on avoidable circumstances are generally granted with a grade penalty for only a very limited amount of time.
