Dean of the Boston Campus (Center for Urban Ministerial Education)

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (GCTS) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Boston campus and Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME). GCTS seeks a dynamic and innovative Christian leader who will expand the horizons and increase the visibility of CUME in Boston, New England, nationally and internationally.

The Dean is the academic leader and executive administrator of CUME. The Dean must be an articulate spokesperson for GCTS generally and CUME in particular to all appropriate constituencies, including area Churches, the Christian business community and other community leaders. The Dean must ensure high standards and professionalism at all levels of endeavor, and be committed to being a practitioner-scholar.

As executive administrator, the Dean must be able to demonstrate effective managerial skills, fiscal responsibility, budget management, strategic planning and fund-raising.

 

The profile of the Dean will be a person with strong leadership qualities including evidence of the following:

  • Evidence a clear and well-articulated Christian commitment
  • Resonate with the unique Christian mission and identity of GCTS
  • Reflect a deep passion for and possess practical experience in urban ministry
  • Able to think theologically and creatively about urban realities, with ability to draw from a variety of theological traditions
  • Manifest a commitment to racial reconciliation
  • Possess strong cultural competencies and a proven record of ministering effectively in multicultural contexts
  • Exemplify a strong commitment to the church, with active involvement in a local congregation
  • Serve as a bridge, advocate, and mediator between CUME and the South Hamilton campus
  • Appreciate the history of the CUME campus, and exhibit clear enthusiasm for urban education and contextual learning
  • Able to define academic excellence contextually
  • Exhibit a collaborative leadership style
  • Create a positive and collegial work environment for staff, and ability to rally them around the mission 
  • The ability to create and implement a clear vision for CUME
  • Serve as an ambassador  for CUME with greater Boston community
  • The capacity to identify and engage external constituencies to secure programmatic and financial support
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships across denominations and community organizations within the city of Boston
  • The ability to develop and implement a culture of high standards and excellent performance
  • An understanding of and commitment to programs and activities that enhance the local, national and international presence of CUME

Key responsibilities and requirements for the Dean include the following: 

Administrative Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the Provost’s Council and report to the Provost, with indirect lines to the President
  • Manage the overall administrative processes of the CUME campus
  • Communicate effectively to staff, faculty, students and Board of Advisors essential information for the well-being of the campus
  • Work cooperatively with the Dean of the GCTS Hispanic Program
  • Function as a team player to achieve the goals of CUME in accordance with the strategic plan of GCTS
  • Recruit and retain excellent faculty
  • Understand and maintain accreditation standards and processes
  • Work with staff to increase enrollment
  • Other duties as assigned

Pastoral and Relational Leadership

 

  • Collaborate with the Advancement Office at South Hamilton to help cultivate friends and donors in the city of Boston
  • Live in or near the city of Boston, and be willing to preach and teach in churches throughout the greater Boston area
  • Nurture and model a biblically-informed spiritual atmosphere on campus
  • Work well with the CUME Board of Advisors in assessing needs of the city and how the campus can respond to those needs

Scholarly Leadership

  • Teach two courses a year
  • Support faculty teaching, research and community service
  • Develop personally a practitioner-scholar approach to theological education, and nurture that model among CUME faculty
  • Facilitate models of urban ministry education in collaboration with urban leaders around the world

 

The successful candidate should have an earned doctorate from a reputable academic institution, academic accomplishments and scholarly publications sufficient to meet the standards for appointment as a faculty member. Starting date for this position is July 1, 2010. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
