One-Year Program  

Welcome to the Theological ESL Program at Gordon-Conwell—Charlotte! This one-year program offers international students the opportunity to increase their written and verbal English skills in preparation for pursuing graduate studies in theology.

Q. Where is GCTS Charlotte?

A: The seminary is located in the Steele Creek area of south-west Charlotte. It is very close to the border of South Carolina.Other towns or areas nearby include: Ballantyne, NC; Lake Wylie, NC; Pineville, NC, Fort Mill, SC and Rock Hill, SC.

Q. What is the academic schedule?

A: The Theological ESL Program follows the same semester schedule as the masters-level programs at the Charlotte campus. Our registration office publishes annual academic calendars and course schedules for the Charlotte campus.

Q: What if I want to start classes immediately, but I missed the application deadline?

A: Apply as soon as possible. Depending on enrollment numbers it is possible for students to begin later in a term.

Q: Do I need a TOEFL score to start in the ESL program?

A: No. You can enter the ESL program without a TOEFL score. You will take a level assessment test when you arrive.

Q: How many levels of ESL do you have?

A: We offer 3 levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. 

Q: I don’t want to attend seminary classes. Can I still study ESL here?

A: Yes! We know our students have different goals. We do integrate daily devotionals, occasional chapel attendance and theological principals into our ESL classes.

Q: Can I study ESL at GCTS as a part-time student?

A: It depends on your type of visa. It is possible for us create a part-time course schedule for students who want or need it.

Q: Does GCTS offer housing or have dormitories on campus?

A: No, GCTS does not have dormitories on campus. However, we can offer suggestions to help you find housing. 

Q: Does GCTS offer health insurance for international students in the ESL program?

A: No. There are several companies that provide health insurance for international students studying in the United States.

ESL Application Procedures 

  1. Complete the online application!
  2. Include in your personal statement essay a paragraph about why you wish to learn English and study English in a seminary. 
  3. If your application has been approved, we will e-mail you a letter of acceptance as soon as possible. You will be required to provide the following items to reserve your admission:
  • $75 non-refundable matriculation deposit
  • Biographical Data Form

Upon acceptance, you may proceed with the Application for I-20, so that you can apply for an F-1 visa for study in the United States.
