Hosted by Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and its faculty\, Telos explores key topics in biblical studies and theology to cultivate Christian maturation across the whole Church. \nAs Gordon-Conwell celebrates 20 years in Jacksonville\, the October 9–10 conference will explore the theme of Jubilee. Join us as we dive into the riches of God’s Word together\, reflecting on the Jubilee and God’s heart for bringing freedom to the captives and rest to the weary. \nRegister Today \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is Jubilee?\n Leviticus 25 instructs the Israelites to practice the year of Jubilee\, which required that every 50 years all debts would be cancelled and land that had been sold would revert back to the original owners. \nThis unique practice ensured that once in every generation\, Israelite society would have a “reset”\, in which every person was released from the toil of their labors and burden of their debts to be reunited with family on their ancestral inheritance. \nThe Jubilee was a homecoming that served as a signpost of the coming redemption\, when all creation would be released from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom of the children of God (Rom. 8:21). \nJesus began his public ministry by announcing that the Jubilee had arrived in him: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). He came to release those in bondage to sin\, restore them to the Father and secure for them their heavenly inheritance as redeemed children of God. \nAs his body\, the Church is called to proclaim and embody that same Jubilee by bringing freedom to the captive and rest to the weary. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Speakers\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Christine Palmer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. David Palmer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Scott M. SUMMARY:Feasting: Visual Art & Spoken Word
DESCRIPTION:Feasting is a central theme in our lives and in the story of God\, and this event is an opportunity to reflect creatively on how we experience the goodness of God in material\, sensory\, and edible ways. A series of original paintings by Hilary Siber Edwards are inspired by the Old Testament Feasts of the Lord as filtered through her own story\, and a spoken word performance by Monica Harrison will explore this theme through the gift of words. \nThis event includes dialogue with visual artist Hilary Siber Edwards\, a presentation from spoken word artist Monica Harrison\, opportunity for audience response and Q&A\, time to enjoy the artwork\, and an optional invitation to stay and feast together over lunch. Attendees can also enjoy viewing the other visual art display entitled “We Three Kings.” \nThis event takes place within the Explore Seminary opportunity at Gordon-Conwell’s Charlotte campus\, and if you are interested in this whole event\, please visit Charlotte Explore Seminary. \nHilary Siber Edwards is an artist living and working in Charlotte since 2016. She graduated in 2007 from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Environmental Design and in 2015 from Clemson University with an MFA in Painting. Her personal studio work explores the fractured aspects of perception through contemporary landscape painting and sculptures. She creates murals and sculptural installations as well as teaching part-time at the college level. \nMonica Harrison\, South Carolina native\, now residing in Charlotte\, is a dynamic Christian spoken word artist. Her gift allows her to blend life experiences with biblical applications to deliver poetry that encourages\, inspires\, and uplifts audiences. Not afraid to address touchy topics\, her perspective and delivery will capture your attention and leave you better than you were before. She holds to a motto that “one word can change your life.” \nRegister Today

SUMMARY:Humility as a Christian Identity-Marker
DESCRIPTION:If Christians would wholeheartedly embrace humility\, our witness in the world can be radically improved. Humility is often misunderstood\, overlooked\, or even disparaged. Such is the case today and was also true in the early days of the Jesus movement. However\, humility is part of Christ’s self-description (Matthew 11:29) and ought to be an identifier of his followers. Let’s recover Scripture’s presentation of humility\, dispel some myths about it\, and accept the invitation to live humbly. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. No RSVP required for those joining online. \nRegistration is only required for those planning to attend in person at Gordon-Conwell—Hamilton. Lunch will be provided for those attending in person. \nRegistration closes on Wednesday\, September 9 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. It will be streamed live through Facebook and at www.gcts.edu/live. \n  \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nRev. Dr. Dennis R. Edwards is currently Senior Research Faculty at Northern Seminary (Lisle\, IL). Until recently\, Dr. Edwards was Seminary Dean and Vice President for Church Relations at North Park Theological Seminary\, after having previously served as Associate Professor of New Testament. He has nearly four decades of urban pastoral ministry experience and is the author of Humility Illuminated: The Biblical Path Back to Christian Character (IVP)\, 1 Peter in the Story of God Bible Commentary series (Zondervan)\, What is the Bible and How Do We Understand It? (Herald Press)\, Might from the Margins: The Gospel’s Power to Turn the Tables on Injustice (Herald Press)\, along with several academic essays. \nDr. Davi C. Ribeiro Lin is an assistant professor of Pastoral Theology and Ministry at Gordon-Conwell. His interest in pastoral theology and ministry has been shaped by an interdisciplinary perspective; he is trained in practical theology\, counseling psychology\, and the pastoral perspective of Augustine of Hippo. Dr. Ribeiro Lin has served for a decade as an evangelical pastor in Brazil\, covering a wide range of areas within the church\, including preaching\, teaching\, discipleship\, pastoral care\, and counseling. He brings a global perspective to the Gordon-Conwell community as an Asian-Latin American pastor who was theologically trained in Europe and South and North America\, and specialized in the work of African Bishop Augustine of Hippo. As someone who was raised between two cultures (Brazilian mother and a Taiwanese father)\, he soon realized how grace and truth were to be cultivated in order to foster unity in diversity\, both in family\, church\, and society. \n

SUMMARY:Singing Through Struggle: Building Community in Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:Music is often called “the universal language” but digging deeper\, we can see how music helps us communicate values\, deeply felt needs\, complex feelings\, and core identities. At church\, when we sing\, sing a certain way\, fund and defund singing\, or argue about singing\, we’re conveying something about who we are or want to be. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Carolynne Hitter Brown will share her research on ways the Black Church has historically relied on music to navigate challenging waters and changing courses\, resist racist forces without and power structures within\, and formulate an authentic and Christ-centered community identity. Considering how cultural polarities\, diverse social issues\, and global struggles effect congregations today\, Dr. Hitter Brown will suggest possible ways music in worship can heal and build Christian community. \nDr. Nicholas Rowe\, Kenneth and Jean Hansen Associate Professor of Leadership\, and Dr. Wes Vander Lugt\, Adjunct Professor of Theology and Acting Director of the Leighton Ford Initiative in Theology\, the Arts\, and Gospel Witness\, will give the response. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free\, open to the public\, and will stream live on Facebook and at www.gcts.edu/live. \nRegistration is only required for those planning to attend in person at Gordon-Conwell—Hamilton.  \nRegister by Wednesday\, April 8 \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nAfter earning her MM in Music Composition from the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary\, Dr. Carolynne Hitter Brown served as music and worship minister at churches in Laurel\, MD and Cambridge\, MA\, where she also assisted in church planting. Her curiosity about the influence of historical memory on worship and congregational life led her to pursue a ThD at Boston University School of Theology in biblical and historical studies. As an interdisciplinary scholar\, she applied herself to a rich exploration of Christian history and worship with a deep dive into evangelical history and Black Christian experience. A lifelong passion for urban ministry that began in Detroit and continued in cities like Dallas\, St. Louis\, Washington D.C.\, and Boston\, led Carolynne to pursue a teaching role at Gordon-Conwell\, where she felt called to support the seminary’s ongoing commitment to urban ministerial education and training. Carolynne’s book Singing Through Struggle: Music\, Worship\, and Identity in Postemancipation Black Churches came out from The University Press of Mississippi last spring and represents over 15 years of archival research. \nDr. Nicholas Rowe is the Kenneth and Jean Hansen Associate Professor of Leadership at Gordon-Conwell. His teaching and research interests investigate how communities use the past to form collective identities and how this fuels intergroup conflict. He spent more than twenty years consulting about cross-racial and cross-ethnic reconciliation and conflict resolution. He also provided pastoral counseling and spiritual direction for reconciling communities in the USA and South Africa. \nDr. Wes Vander Lugt serves as adjunct professor of theology and acting director of the Leighton Ford Initiative in Theology\, the Arts\, and Gospel Witness at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He received an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary and a PhD in Theology\, Imagination\, and the Arts from the University of St. Andrews. In addition to teaching and writing\, Wes is the co-founder of Kinship Plot\, a nonprofit in Charlotte that cultivates resonant relationships of every kind.

SUMMARY:The Ultimate Sabbath: Rest (and Work?) in the New Heavens and New Earth
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by The Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics\nWe typically think of the Sabbath in individualistic terms: I work\, and then I rest. But is the world itself destined for a Sabbath rest? If so\, how does it get there\, and what would such a Sabbath be like? Join us as we explore what the Scriptures say (and don’t say) about the ultimate end of the world. Specifically\, we will address the questions (and welcome yours): \n\nHow do the ideas of “counter-creation” (humanity’s misuse of its creative capacities to suit its own end and not those of God) and ‘de-creation’ (the tendency of things in this world to fall apart) affect your daily work?\nIn what ways do you see your work pointing towards the new creation?\nWhat might “sabbath rest” look like in the new creation?\nCan there be a “restful work” or a “working rest” that goes beyond the opposition between these two things in the present order of things?\n\nTune in on April 14 at 7:00 p.m. \n\nPresenters \n \nDr. Ken Barnes is director of the Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics in the Public Square and the Mockler-Phillips professor of workplace theology and business ethics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Dr. Barnes spent many years as a senior international executive for several multi-billion dollar companies doing business on six continents. \n  \nDr. Sean McDonough is the Mary French Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He came to Gordon-Conwell in 2000 from Pacific Theological College in Suva\, Fiji\, where he had served as the Chair of the Biblical Studies Department and as a lecturer in New Testament. His research interests include creation/cosmology in the Bible and the Ancient Near East\, Hellenistic Judaism\, Greek philosophy and religion and the Book of Revelation. \n  \nDr. Euntaek David Shin is Visiting Assistant Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at Wheaton College. He previously taught interdisciplinary humanities at Baylor University and holds degrees from Wheaton College\, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary\, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Dr. Yutaka Morishima\nProfessor and University Chaplain\, School of Culture and Creative Studies\, Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan\nTopic: Christian Witness and Presence in Japan Today \nYutaka Morishima is a professor and university chaplain at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan and visiting scholar at OMSC in Princeton Theological Seminary (2023-2024). The subject of his Ph.D. dissertation was the Atonement Theology of P.T. Forsyth. He has served as a Protestant church pastor in Nagasaki\, where the atomic bomb was dropped. His recent research is on the ideological history of human rights\, especially the formation process of a unique human rights concept in Asia. In particular\, the use of terms such as “human rights” and “peace state” in political documents is demonstrated to support the concept of Japan’s national polity\, shedding new light on the formation of modern imperial ideology. \nFrom the perspective of Christianity\, he has discerned overlooked aspects in the study of Japan’s national polity and State Shinto\, specifically\, the differences between Western and Japanese ideologies\, gaining attention. \nIn 2015\, he received the prestigious Ruikotsu Award for Excellence from the Chugai Nippo Press for his paper titled “The Influence and Challenges of Christian Human Rights Thought in Japan.” Furthermore\, in 2021\, he was awarded the Aoyama Gakuin Academic Prize for his work “The History of Thought on Resistance Rights and Human Rights: A Clash of the Western and Tenno (Japanese) Type.” \nHe has published widely for both academic and general readers in Japanese. He also studies why the Christianity is not spreading in Japan and\, in his ministry\, he makes various efforts to preach the gospel to young souls.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Terry C. SUMMARY:Spring Ministry Forum: Responding Well to Mental Health Issues within the Korean-American Christian Community
DESCRIPTION: \n\nCome learn from therapist Migum Gweon\, LMFT\, as she provides an overview of common mental health issues within the Korean American church community and addresses ways that pastors and church leaders can respond and support their congregation members. SUMMARY:What is the Context? Athanasius's Biblical Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:All seminary students and pastors are familiar with the dreaded phrase “out of context.” We all know that we should interpret each biblical passage in light of its historical and literary context\, and a great deal of what we learn in seminary is how to do exactly that. But when we compare our own biblical interpretation with that of the early church\, we find that that theirs seems puzzling and maybe even disturbing. Are the church fathers allegorizing the text inappropriately? Are they taking most passages out of context? \nIn this Dean’s Forum\, we’ll examine one of the most important writings from the early church to try to gain insight on this question. Athanasius is one of the most celebrated early Christian writers\, and he writes against the most famous heretic of all time\, Arius. Furthermore\, Athanasius’s main point is that Arius is interpreting all his favorite biblical passages wrong. What is the interpretive principle that enables Athanasius to be so confident? And what can we learn from his interpretation today? \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free open to the public. RSVP is required for in-person attendance and lunch only. You don’t not need to register to join us for the livestream on Facebook. \nRegistration for in-person closes on Wed\, Mar 18 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. \nMany of our events are recorded (with speakers permission) and photographs may be taken for publicity purposes and promotion on social media. For more information regarding this or to request that your image not be used for this purpose\, please contact the Academic Dean’s office at deansforum@gordonconwell.edu. \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nDr. Don Fairbairn is the Robert E. Cooley Distinguished Professor of Early Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His research interests focus on the relation between the doctrines of the Trinity\, Christ\, salvation and Christian life in the early church\, especially in the 4th through 6th centuries. His current research project (which he is preparing with Gordon-Conwell adjunct Dr. Slavik Lytvynenko) is a new translation of Athanasius’s greatest work\, Against the Arians. \nDr.

SUMMARY:AI\, the Imago Dei\, and Human Flourishing
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the The Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics\nWe increasingly live in a world shaped by AI. Data analytics track our online behaviors\, habits\, and activity while also anticipating choices through fine-tuned predictability features. AI reflects human behavior in what’s been called the AI Mirror. But how does AI not only mirror human behavior\, but also shape human behavior? How does existing AI and new forms of generative AI challenge what it means to be human? How does Christian theology’s commitment that humans are made in the image of God reframe meaning in the face of machine-driven information and communication? \nAt the intersection of theology\, ethics\, economics\, and the arts\, three scholars share perspectives around this AI moment and the significance of leaning into the Christian theological tradition for preserving human distinctiveness. Offering concerns and cautions as well as hope and vision\, their dialogue\, moderated by Mockler Center Senior Fellow Dr. Natt Gantt\, will aim to enrich our understanding across disciplines while together seeking wisdom as it pertains to the impacts of AI on human flourishing and the common good. \nJoin us on Facebook Live at 7:00 p.m. on March 24th \n\nPresenters \nDr. Autumn Ridenour is the Mockler Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Gordon-Conwell. She teaches theological ethics specializing in aging\, death\, virtue ethics\, and the spiritual impact of technology. Author of Sabbath Rest as Vocation\, she writes widely on Christology\, ethics\, and moral development. She worships at First Baptist Church of Sudbury\, MA where her husband is senior pastor. \n  \n \nDr. Mia Chung teaches chamber music performance at Harvard University and previously served as professor of musical studies and performance at the Curtis Institute of Music. An award-winning concert pianist and recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant\, she has performed internationally and recorded works by Bach\, Beethoven\, and Schumann. Author of Chinese Émigré Composers and Divergent Modernisms\, she also leads the Octet Collaborative at MIT and serves as senior scholar for the Veritas Forum \n  \nDr. Jonathan D. Teubner is a research associate at Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program\, where he leads the AI and Flourishing Initiative. A scholar of philosophy\, theology\, and cultural sociology\, he is the author of Charity after Augustine and Prayer after Augustine. His work explores theology\, artificial intelligence\, and social conflict\, and he is a contributing editor at The Hedgehog Review. \n  \nModerator \nDr. Natt Gantt is Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at High Point University School of Law. He previously served on the faculty of Harvard Law School and Regent University School of Law\, where he also helped lead initiatives in Christian legal studies and ethical formation. He holds degrees from Duke University\, Harvard Law School\, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

SUMMARY:Dean’s Forum: Exodus: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Exodus is the seminal moment in Israel’s history as a nation. This signal act of God’s saving power liberated Israel from oppression in Egypt\, enabling the Israelites to serve God freely\, even as he dwelt in their midst on their journey to the promised land. Recalling their deliverance from Egypt\, the Israelites celebrated the Passover each year. The story did not end with the inauguration of the New Covenant by Jesus. The Exodus instead became the template for God’s saving act in Christ: baptism represents the liberation from the kingdom of sin and death\, but the Christian life remains a perilous journey through the wilderness of the world until we reach the Promised Land of the New Jerusalem. In this Forum\, we will explore the roots of the Exodus in the deep history of Israel\, and see its final flourishing in the Exodus journey of the Apocalypse. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person. NO RSVP NEEDED IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH ONLINE. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person. \nRegistration by February 4 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. It will be streamed live through Facebook and at www.gcts.edu/live. Justin Young is the Program Faculty (Old Testament) of Special Programs at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His main area of research is in Pentateuchal studies\, with a particular view toward the covenant at Mount Sinai and the construction of the tabernacle in Exodus 19-40. Some of his other research interests include the theology and exegesis of the Psalms\, Biblical Theology\, and cultic rituals in the ancient Near-East. \nDr.

SUMMARY:The Soul of Counseling in an Age of AI: Where Wisdom Meets Technology
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming mental health care—from client intake to assessment\, treatment planning\, supervision\, and spiritual care. SUMMARY:Dean's Forum: The State\, God’s Servant to do Good?
DESCRIPTION:In many theological discussions of immigration\, Romans 13’s exhortation to be subject to governing authorities plays a central role\, especially in framing discussions of undocumented immigration. However\, Christian ethics would do well to consider crucial passages like this one from multiple angles and within the broader frameworks of the canon and moral theology. Join us for The State\, God’s Servant to do Good? Romans 13 & Justice in Immigration Law to explore this topic. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person because free lunch is provided. You can also watch the livestream on Facebook. \nRegister by Wednesday\, October 1 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. Dean’s Forums exist to explore topics of church\, culture\, and theology. To learn more about upcoming events and to watch recordings of previous events\, visit the Dean’s Forum page. \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nDr. Glenn Butner comes to Gordon-Conwell after serving for eight years on the theology and ministry faculty of Sterling College in Kansas\, where he also directed the honors program. Dr. Butner’s research and writing is focused on dogmatic theology and social ethics. His dogmatic writings\, including Trinitarian Dogmatics and Christological Dogmatics (forthcoming)\, draw from a wide range of Christian traditions throughout history and across the globe with analyses rooted in the inerrant text of Scripture. In his social ethics writings\, like Jesus the Refugee and Work Out Your Salvation\, he seeks a nuanced analysis informed by detailed recognition of the social\, legal\, and economic contexts within which moral decision making occurs. \n  \n  \nDr. Alvin Padilla returned to Gordon-Conwell in 2022 after serving as Academic Dean\, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives\, and Director of Advanced Degrees at Western Theological Seminary. He has taught at Nyack College\, Spanish Eastern School of Theology\, New York Theological Seminary and pastored Fort Washington Heights Presbyterian Church in New York City. He is an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and has also served as the interim pastor of churches in Newton and Lawrence\, MA\, and Windham\, NH. Having written commentaries on the Gospels of John and Luke for Fortress Press\, he is currently working on a commentary on the Book of Hebrews. \n  \n  \nDr. Autumn Ridenour’s primary interests are in the areas of theological\, philosophical\, and social ethics\, with attention to Scripture\, history\, and systematic theology. Her book Sabbath Rest as Vocation: Aging toward Death with Bloomsbury/T&T Clark (2018) explores the meaning of death and aging in the theologies of St. Augustine and Karl Barth. Her more recent research concerns technology and digital devices\, given their impact on moral development\, spirituality\, and relationships. She is passionate about the foundations of theological ethics and looks forward to exploring this theme further in the classroom. Ridenour also participates in her local faith community of First Baptist Church\, Sudbury\, MA\, where her husband serves as the senior pastor. \n
