SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Aging Towards Sabbath Rest
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Autumn Ridenour for a public lecture on the challenges of aging in Western culture\, where individualism\, autonomy\, and productivity often shape identity. She will draw on medical ethics and Christian theology to reframe aging as a calling marked by dependence\, community\, worship\, and hope. \nThis talk discusses the challenges to aging from western culture given its emphasis on individualism\, autonomy\, and productivity. Instead\, turning to themes across geriatrics in medical ethics as well as Christian theology causes us to rethink the meaning of aging and the important role of dependence\, community\, and worship for identity and agency that ends in hope. \nRegister Today! \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n Dr. Autumn Ridenour is the Mockler Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Gordon-Conwell. She teaches theological ethics specializing in aging\, death\, virtue ethics\, and the spiritual impact of technology. Author of Sabbath Rest as Vocation\, she writes widely on Christology\, ethics\, and moral development. She worships at First Baptist Church of Sudbury\, MA where her husband is senior pastor.

SUMMARY:Dean’s Forum: Exodus: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Exodus is the seminal moment in Israel’s history as a nation. This signal act of God’s saving power liberated Israel from oppression in Egypt\, enabling the Israelites to serve God freely\, even as he dwelt in their midst on their journey to the promised land. Recalling their deliverance from Egypt\, the Israelites celebrated the Passover each year. The story did not end with the inauguration of the New Covenant by Jesus. The Exodus instead became the template for God’s saving act in Christ: baptism represents the liberation from the kingdom of sin and death\, but the Christian life remains a perilous journey through the wilderness of the world until we reach the Promised Land of the New Jerusalem. In this Forum\, we will explore the roots of the Exodus in the deep history of Israel\, and see its final flourishing in the Exodus journey of the Apocalypse. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. RSVP is required for those who are planning to attend in person. NO RSVP NEEDED IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH ONLINE. Lunch will be provided to those who will be attending in person. \nRegistration by February 4 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. It will be streamed live through Facebook and at www.gcts.edu/live. \nMany of our events are recorded (with speakers permission) and photographs may be taken for publicity purposes and promotion on social media. For more information regarding this or to request that your image not be used for this purpose\, please contact the Academic Dean’s office at deansforum@gordonconwell.edu. \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nDr. Justin Young is the Program Faculty (Old Testament) of Special Programs at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. SUMMARY:AI\, the Imago Dei\, and Human Flourishing
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the The Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics\nWe increasingly live in a world shaped by AI. Data analytics track our online behaviors\, habits\, and activity while also anticipating choices through fine-tuned predictability features. AI reflects human behavior in what’s been called the AI Mirror. But how does AI not only mirror human behavior\, but also shape human behavior? How does existing AI and new forms of generative AI challenge what it means to be human? How does Christian theology’s commitment that humans are made in the image of God reframe meaning in the face of machine-driven information and communication? \nAt the intersection of theology\, ethics\, economics\, and the arts\, three scholars share perspectives around this AI moment and the significance of leaning into the Christian theological tradition for preserving human distinctiveness. Offering concerns and cautions as well as hope and vision\, their dialogue\, moderated by Mockler Center Senior Fellow Dr. Natt Gantt\, will aim to enrich our understanding across disciplines while together seeking wisdom as it pertains to the impacts of AI on human flourishing and the common good. \nJoin us on Facebook Live at 7:00 p.m. on March 24th \n\nPresenters \nDr. Autumn Ridenour is the Mockler Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Gordon-Conwell. She teaches theological ethics specializing in aging\, death\, virtue ethics\, and the spiritual impact of technology. Teubner is a research associate at Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program\, where he leads the AI and Flourishing Initiative. A scholar of philosophy\, theology\, and cultural sociology\, he is the author of Charity after Augustine and Prayer after Augustine. SUMMARY:What is the Context? Athanasius's Biblical Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:All seminary students and pastors are familiar with the dreaded phrase “out of context.” We all know that we should interpret each biblical passage in light of its historical and literary context\, and a great deal of what we learn in seminary is how to do exactly that. But when we compare our own biblical interpretation with that of the early church\, we find that that theirs seems puzzling and maybe even disturbing. Are the church fathers allegorizing the text inappropriately? Are they taking most passages out of context? \nIn this Dean’s Forum\, we’ll examine one of the most important writings from the early church to try to gain insight on this question. Athanasius is one of the most celebrated early Christian writers\, and he writes against the most famous heretic of all time\, Arius. Furthermore\, Athanasius’s main point is that Arius is interpreting all his favorite biblical passages wrong. What is the interpretive principle that enables Athanasius to be so confident? And what can we learn from his interpretation today? \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free open to the public. RSVP is required for in-person attendance and lunch only. You don’t not need to register to join us for the livestream on Facebook. \nRegistration for in-person closes on Wed\, Mar 18 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. The event will take place in Alumni Hall in Kerr Building at the Hamilton campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Don Fairbairn is the Robert E. Cooley Distinguished Professor of Early Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His academic work focuses on comparative theology\, with particular attention to the encounter between Christianity and the classical intellectual traditions of China. \nYang’s research seeks to reinterpret key theological and anthropological concepts embedded in classical Chinese texts—such as worldview\, understandings of human life\, social order\, and historical consciousness—through sustained dialogue with Christian doctrine. His work aims to construct a cross-cultural theological framework that enables Christianity to be articulated meaningfully within the Chinese intellectual world. \nIn 2004\, Yang published A Textual Study on the Origins of Shangdi in China\, the first scholarly monograph in modern Chinese academic history to apply comparative religious methodology to a systematic study of the concept of Shangdi (the Supreme Deity) in pre-Qin texts. Since then\, he has published theological and interpretive studies on major Chinese classics\, including the Book of Documents\, the Analects\, the Dao De Jing\, and The Great Learning.

SUMMARY:The Ultimate Sabbath: Rest (and Work?) in the New Heavens and New Earth
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by The Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics\nWe typically think of the Sabbath in individualistic terms: I work\, and then I rest. But is the world itself destined for a Sabbath rest? If so\, how does it get there\, and what would such a Sabbath be like? Join us as we explore what the Scriptures say (and don’t say) about the ultimate end of the world. Specifically\, we will address the questions (and welcome yours): \n\nHow do the ideas of “counter-creation” (humanity’s misuse of its creative capacities to suit its own end and not those of God) and ‘de-creation’ (the tendency of things in this world to fall apart) affect your daily work?\nIn what ways do you see your work pointing towards the new creation?\nWhat might “sabbath rest” look like in the new creation?\nCan there be a “restful work” or a “working rest” that goes beyond the opposition between these two things in the present order of things?\n\nTune in on April 14 at 7:00 p.m. \n\nPresenters \n \nDr. Ken Barnes is director of the Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics in the Public Square and the Mockler-Phillips professor of workplace theology and business ethics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Dr. Barnes spent many years as a senior international executive for several multi-billion dollar companies doing business on six continents. \n  \nDr. Sean McDonough is the Mary French Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He came to Gordon-Conwell in 2000 from Pacific Theological College in Suva\, Fiji\, where he had served as the Chair of the Biblical Studies Department and as a lecturer in New Testament. His research interests include creation/cosmology in the Bible and the Ancient Near East\, Hellenistic Judaism\, Greek philosophy and religion and the Book of Revelation. \n  \nDr. Euntaek David Shin is Visiting Assistant Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at Wheaton College. He previously taught interdisciplinary humanities at Baylor University and holds degrees from Wheaton College\, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary\, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is the author of Rest: A Theological Account (Baylor University Press\, 2024). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Singing Through Struggle: Building Community in Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:Music is often called “the universal language” but digging deeper\, we can see how music helps us communicate values\, deeply felt needs\, complex feelings\, and core identities. At church\, when we sing\, sing a certain way\, fund and defund singing\, or argue about singing\, we’re conveying something about who we are or want to be. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Carolynne Hitter Brown will share her research on ways the Black Church has historically relied on music to navigate challenging waters and changing courses\, resist racist forces without and power structures within\, and formulate an authentic and Christ-centered community identity. Considering how cultural polarities\, diverse social issues\, and global struggles effect congregations today\, Dr. Hitter Brown will suggest possible ways music in worship can heal and build Christian community. \nDr. Nicholas Rowe\, Kenneth and Jean Hansen Associate Professor of Leadership\, and Dr. Wes Vander Lugt\, Adjunct Professor of Theology and Acting Director of the Leighton Ford Initiative in Theology\, the Arts\, and Gospel Witness\, will give the response. \nThe Dean’s Forum discussion is free and is open to the public. Registration is only required for those planning to attend in person. \nRegister by Wednesday\, April 8 \nThe Dean’s Forum is hosted by the Academic Dean’s office. \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nAfter earning her MM in Music Composition from the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary\, Dr. Carolynne Hitter Brown served as music and worship minister at churches in Laurel\, MD and Cambridge\, MA\, where she also assisted in church planting. Her curiosity about the influence of historical memory on worship and congregational life led her to pursue a ThD at Boston University School of Theology in biblical and historical studies. As an interdisciplinary scholar\, she applied herself to a rich exploration of Christian history and worship with a deep dive into evangelical history and Black Christian experience. A lifelong passion for urban ministry that began in Detroit and continued in cities like Dallas\, St. Louis\, Washington D.C.\, and Boston\, led Carolynne to pursue a teaching role at Gordon-Conwell\, where she felt called to support the seminary’s ongoing commitment to urban ministerial education and training. \nCarolynne’s book Singing Through Struggle: Music\, Worship\, and Identity in Postemancipation Black Churches came out from The University Press of Mississippi last spring and represents over 15 years of archival research. \nDr. Nicholas Rowe is the Kenneth and Jean Hansen Associate Professor of Leadership at Gordon-Conwell. His teaching and research interests investigate how communities use the past to form collective identities and how this fuels intergroup conflict. He spent more than twenty years consulting about cross-racial and cross-ethnic reconciliation and conflict resolution. He also provided pastoral counseling and spiritual direction for reconciling communities in the USA and South Africa. \nDr. Wes Vander Lugt serves as adjunct professor of theology and acting director of the Leighton Ford Initiative in Theology\, the Arts\, and Gospel Witness at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He received an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary and a PhD in Theology\, Imagination\, and the Arts from the University of St. Andrews. In addition to teaching and writing\, Wes is the co-founder of Kinship Plot\, a nonprofit in Charlotte that cultivates resonant relationships of every kind.

Hosted by Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and its faculty\, Telos explores key topics in biblical studies and theology to cultivate Christian maturation across the whole Church. \nAs Gordon-Conwell celebrates 20 years in Jacksonville\, the October 9–10 conference will explore the theme of Jubilee. Join us as we dive into the riches of God’s Word together\, reflecting on the Jubilee and God’s heart for bringing freedom to the captives and rest to the weary. \nGet Early Bird Tickets by July 15 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is Jubilee?\n Leviticus 25 instructs the Israelites to practice the year of Jubilee\, which required that every 50 years all debts would be cancelled and land that had been sold would revert back to the original owners. \nThis unique practice ensured that once in every generation\, Israelite society would have a “reset”\, in which every person was released from the toil of their labors and burden of their debts to be reunited with family on their ancestral inheritance. \nThe Jubilee was a homecoming that served as a signpost of the coming redemption\, when all creation would be released from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom of the children of God (Rom. 8:21). \nJesus began his public ministry by announcing that the Jubilee had arrived in him: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). He came to release those in bondage to sin\, restore them to the Father and secure for them their heavenly inheritance as redeemed children of God. \nAs his body\, the Church is called to proclaim and embody that same Jubilee by bringing freedom to the captive and rest to the weary. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Speakers\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Christine Palmer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. David Palmer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Scott M.
