Dale Barnes (MARE ’79)
- Dale Barnes passed away on January 7, 2026. He was a longtime Alabama Baptist pastor and distinguished Vietnam War veteran. After distinguished military service, which included being awarded the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars, Dale earned a B.A. in Biblical Studies from Gordon College and an M.A. in Religious Education from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Over the next 46 years, he served as pastor of six churches, including four in Alabama – Calvary Baptist in Prattville, Beulah Baptist in Wetumpka, Rock Springs Baptist in Tallassee, and Titus Baptist. Rev. Roland Francis Batchelder, Sr. (MDiv ’70)
- Rev. Roland Francis Batchelder, Sr. most recently of Whiting, New Jersey, went home to be with his Savior on May 13, 2021 surrounded by family singing the hymns he loved so dearly. Roland served in the Korean War and later worked with the Red Cross before hearing the call to serve in ministry. He graduated from Gordon-Conwell with a Master’s of Divinity and moved with his family to Wilton, Maine where, with the constant support of his wife, he established Calvary Hill Baptist Church and Christian School.
Rev. Robert Gene Beard (MDiv ’78)
- Robert (Bob) G. Beard passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Olean General Hospital. Bob enlisted in the National Guard in December 1955 where he became a helicopter mechanic stationed in Japan. After marrying Sandy, the couple moved to San Bernadino, CA where Bob was employed at Boeing in Riverside California. He moved with his family to Illinois, where he was ordained on January 7, 1979, at Berwick Baptist Church in Berwick, IL. Bob served two American Baptist Churches in Illinois and one in Iowa. In 1990 Bob became a United Methodist minister serving many churches in Iowa and NY and fully retired in 2020. Along the way he also served as Chaplin for several police, fire departments, and hospitals. Bob was a past member of the 4-H Club, Lion’s Club, American Baptist Church (ABC), the United Methodist Church (UMC) Iowa Annual Conference and the American Legion. Craig Lee Bensen (MDiv ’73, DMin ’93)
- The Rev. Dr. Craig Lee Bensen went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ unexpectedly at his home in the early hours of Sunday, November 8, 2020. He was 72 years old. Craig was impassioned with a lifelong vision to see the Kingdom of God made manifest and honored throughout Vermont. To that end, he was exceptionally gifted at building unity across denominational lines of Christian leaders with remarkable grace. His compassion and wit were surpassed only by his humility. Herbert Louis Bill (MDiv ’78)
- Herbert Louis Bill (“Bill”) passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024. He dedicated his life to serve in Nashua, NH through Emmanuel’s Church and taught Vacation Bible School to neighborhood children for years. A fuller obituary can be viewed here.
Rev. Dr. David L. Boumgarden (MDiv ’77)
- Rev. Dr. David Lewis Boumgarden, 74, went home to the Lord on August 27, 2025. He served faithfully in the Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years. After graduating from Gordon-Conwell, he served at Old Stone Presbyterian Church until 1983, when he was invited to begin River Glen Presbyterian Church in Naperville, IL. While there, he led River Glen through two building projects and countless other mission initiatives. He resigned from River Glen in 2016 and later served as interim pastor at two other churches before retiring in 2023. David was a pastor, church consultant, pastoral coach, and friend. He was also a lover of sports, an avid reader, artist, scholar, and a wonderful and devoted spouse, father, and grandfather (Papa) to his family. A fuller obituary can be read here.
Robert C. Bradbury, Jr. (MDiv ’77)
- Robert C. Bradbury, Jr., age 74, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, surrounded by his loving family. He served as a minister and pastor in various greater Boston churches for many years, most recently as associate pastor of the First Church in Weymouth. Benjamin Bryant (MDiv ’70)
- Benjamin Bryant, from Nashville, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on January 23, 2025. Benjamin’s example of kindness and steadfastness in the Lord brought great joy and positive influences on many people. Rev. David Robert “Dave” Carlstrom (MTS ’74)
- Dave Carlstrom, born and raised on Long Island, New York, passed away in January 2025. While Dave was an undergraduate student at Cornell University, he spent a semester on the technical staff of ELWA, which is a missionary radio station in Monrovia, Liberia. Dave spent a summer in Japan doing construction work on a missionary’s home outside Tokyo. While in seminary he got involved with a Boston-based Christian media production group, he was involved initially as a roadie for “Cry 3,” a then state-of-the-art multi-screen evangelistic show, subsequently as the show’s booking manager, and finally as marketing director for the company’s nascent electronics hardware. In 1976, Dave was recruited to work for Intercristo, a Christian personnel recruitment and career development ministry in Seattle with which he served in a variety of capacities for eleven years. In 2009 Dave became CEO of Air Serv International, a not-for-profit humanitarian air service operating primarily in East Africa. A fuller obituary can be viewed here.
Edmund C. De La Cour Jr. (MTS ’71)
- Edmund “Ed” de la Cour Jr. passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021 after a bravely fought fight with lymphoma and pneumonia. He was ordained in 1971 in Georgiaville, Rhode Island and became Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Baldwinville where preached for the next 30 years. Deighton Whitfield Douglin (MDiv ’76)
- Deighton Whitfield Douglin, age 95, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2024. He had a long and fruitful ministry in education and medical care in Alice’s Congo and elsewhere in Africa, working with the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society (World Venture). Deighton served primarily as an educator and church and mission association leader, establishing schools in Congo from primary and secondary to university levels. He served as a legal representative for CBFMS mission in Congo, as well as the President of the Lion’s Club in Goma, Congo. A fuller obituary can be viewed here.
Richard Hollis Freeman (MDiv ’73)
- Richard Hollis Freeman entered into the presence of his Heavenly Father on August 6, 2022. Richard served as a Congregational Church Pastor, residing in several communities throughout the United States. He was a lover of history, architecture, archeology, genealogy, and reading. Rev. Robert Allen French (MDiv ’75)
- Robert French, age 74, graduated from his earthly home in Dallas to his heavenly home on October 25, 2023. God extended his life for 15 years past his original cancer diagnosis. His deep understanding of God’s grace and forgiveness colored colored his life and ministry. He served on the mission field on Romblon Island and in the Philippines, working in Bible translation and discipleship ministries.
John L. Good (MRE ’70)
- John L. Good III, 77, died peacefully on Oct. 18, 2020. He held a Master of Religious Education degree from Gordon-Conwell and an Honorary Doctorate from Endicott College. Jack married Susan on April 9, 1967. Jack had leadership roles on numerous boards and committees. He served as an adjunct faculty member at both Gordon College and North Shore Community College.
E. Lars Gren (MDiv ’77)
- E. Lars Gren, born on September 9, 1936, in Huntington, NY, to Scandinavian immigrants Edmar and Ingrid Gren, peacefully completed his earthly race on April 2, 2025, at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock, Arkansas. Lars lived a life of resilience, faith, and quiet devotion. After a childhood shaped by war and displacement in Nazi-occupied Norway, he returned to America, served in the U.S. Navy, and eventually followed a calling to ministry. In 1977, he married author and missionary Elisabeth Elliot, faithfully managing her ministry and legacy for over four decades. In his later years, Lars experienced a profound spiritual renewal, finding deep peace even amidst the progression of dementia. He was preceded in death by his beloved Elisabeth and is survived by his brother, Leif, extended family, and stepdaughter Valerie Elliot Shepard, along with her children and grandchildren. Dr. Gary Harlan Hall (ThM ’72)
- Dr. Gary Harlan Hall, entered the presence of the Lord on June 15, 2019 with his family beside him at home. Dr. Gary Hall was a scholar and a professor of Old Testament, and taught Old Testament and Bible Doctrine at Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, KY from 1972 until 1986. In 1986 he was called to Lincoln Christian Seminary in Lincoln, IL as Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew until his retirement in 2012. Dr. Gary Hall taught an estimated 4,000 students over his 40-year career in higher education. He was a lifelong servant of the Lord serving at various times as a youth minister, preaching minister, deacon, youth sponsor, small group leader, Bible study teacher (over 40 years), and elder (almost 30 years). David A. Hulley (MTS ’71)
- David Hulley entered the presence of the Lord on October 18, 2024. He studied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Theology, and Business and had a wide variety of careers. David also founded the non-profit Stoneworks International as a conduit for aid, volunteers, and good news, which stretches beyond St Petersburg to other countries. Read a fuller obituary here.
Rev. Robert A. Jacob (MDiv ’78)
- Robert Alan Jacob died peacefully at home on February 21, 2026, after a battle with Glioblastoma. He kept his love of God, family, music, and life to the very end. During his career, he was active in Young Life, served as a youth minister, and pastored at Forest Grove Presbyterian Church in PA. He later started an electrical contracting business and finished his career as a butcher at Forte’s Gourmet Market. In everything he did, Bob was a man of great faith who loved God and the people around him, listening and counseling others long after he stopped formally pastoring. Michael Fitzgerald Kelleher (MDiv ’75)
- Rev. Michael Kelleher passed away on February 16, 2024 at the age of 74 in Parker, CO, surrounded by his family.
Timothy J. Keller (MDiv ’75)
- With sadness in our hearts, we nonetheless rejoice that our friend Tim Keller has gone to be with Jesus. Timothy J. Keller lived with the conviction that the Gospel was more powerful than all the principalities and powers of this world. Tim received his pastoral training in the early 1970s and met his life-long soul mate and wife, Kathy, at Gordon-Conwell. Tim then went on to be a prominent author, pastor, and teacher; Tim was one of the Gospel’s most articulate, gracious and forceful voices of our lifetimes. In his final years, Tim taught a year-long preaching course in New York City that encapsulated many of his core values. He is survived by his wife, children, and loving family. Margaret Knowlton (MTS ’75)
- Margaret (Hansen) Knowlton, 84, passed peacefully on January 17, 2023, at home whilst surrounded by her family. Born in Breslau, Germany, Margaret is best known as Imme by her family and friends. She pursued a degree in chemistry and biology at Gordon College before her time at Gordon-Conwell. Upon graduation, she held numerous positions at the Apolo & Lemm space programs, Tufts Medical School, some of Boston’s most prestigious hospitals, and the IRS. Margaret also served as the church organist for the First Baptist church and St. Johns Church in Peabody MA. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Ward Knowlton, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage; her daughter, Kelli, and her husband, Scott; and her son, Daniel, and his fiancé Amanda, among others in her family. Mary Jane Knudson (MATS ’78)
- Mary Jane Knudson, of Carlisle, MA, passed away on January 20, 2026. Mary Jane loved learning, and studied at Wheaton College, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Harvard University, eventually earning a PhD in Education from Harvard in 1989. During her career she served as Vice President of Human Resources at both Fidelity Investments and Oasis Corporation. Mary Jane was also active in her church and community, serving as a deacon at Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord, MA, as well as being a member of the Human Leadership Research Forum and National Charity League. She was an avid reader and lover of the arts. Her family remember Mary Jane for the way she balanced being a mother and wife with a demanding career. A fuller obituary can be found here.
Robert Labounty (MDiv, ’71)
- Robert Labounty, 84, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, December 12, 2022. Robert was a case manager for the Massachusetts Association for the Adult Blind in the Boston area. He pastored churches in Sutton and Mansonville, QC for several years and then several in Lyndon Centre Vermont, USA and in Riverview, NB and ended his career working for CNIB in Saint John, NB. Rev. Dr. James C. Larkin Sr. (MDiv ’77, DMin ’09)
- Rev. Dr. James “Jim” Clarence Larkin Sr. passed away July 24th, 2020. He received a M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell in 1977 and a D.Min. in 2009. Jim married Sharon Lynne on January 30th, 1988. Dr. Larkin pastored Christ Church for over thirty years and started Beckon, a nonprofit organization aimed at mentoring young urban men.
Reverend Joseph Lee McDowell (MDiv ‘70)
- Reverend Joseph (Fr. Joe) Lee McDowell left this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, February 23rd at 9:52pm in Melbourne, Florida. Fr. Joe served as the Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Oakley, Maryland (1971-1980), St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winona, Minnesota (1980-1990), and St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church in Islamorada, Florida (1990-1995). He later served as the Associate Rector at Gloria Dei (Glory of God) Church in Cocoa, Florida (1996-2002). Fr. Joe was also the Founder and Executive Director of Links of Hope in Cocoa, Florida (2002-2018) and Board Treasurer (2018-2025). Fr. Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. Rev. Dr. Patrick R. Novak McDowell (MDiv ’76)
- Patrick R. Novak of San Jose, California, died on February 8, 2020, after a brief battle with cancer. In his youth, Patrick served one tour in Vietnam from 1966-1971 as Sergeant in the USMC. After receiving his MDiv from Gordon Conwell, Patrick earned his DMin at Andover Newton and his PhD at Trinity Seminary. Pat’s passion was to preach the Good News of the gospel and bring others into relationship with Christ. which was fulfilled throughout his pastorate in MA, CT, and CA. Pat is survived by his wife, Norma, daughters and sons-in-law, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Rev. Dr. Lowell J. Meek (MDiv ’75)
- Rev. Dr. Lowell Jackson Meek, 75, went home to be with his Savior peacefully on November 6, 2024, surrounded by his adoring family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. After graduating from Gordon-Conwell, Lowell served with the Coalition for Christian Outreach on the campus of Geneva College in Beaver Falls, where he got ordained in 1976. Lowell was called as an associate pastor to the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, where he served for 10 years and then served as head pastor of Round Hill Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, where he served for 18 years. James M. Moran (MDiv ’79)
- Jim Moran passed away on Oct. 13, 2020 at the age of 69. He had recently retired as senior pastor of the Cranberry Community United Presbyterian Church in Cranberry Twp, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. He received his M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell in 1979 and his D.Min. from the Reformed Seminary in Jackson, MI.
Paul C. Murphy (MDiv ’70)
- Paul C. Murphy passed away on January 20th, 2023. He was ordained into the American Baptist Denomination, and served in Vermont in Richfor, Barre, and led a Bike Touring Camp for teens through the ABC camping program. After moving to Pennsylvania and joining the United Methodist Church, he served in Elkland, York, Middleburg, Shermans Dale, Selinsgrove, Montoursville, and Red Lion. Lee B. Nichols (MDiv ’71)
- Lee B. Nichols passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 21st, 2023. He graduated from Wheaton College with a BA and served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 35th Infantry in Vietnam. After being wounded in action in 1966, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for his heroism as the platoon leader. Upon completing education, Lee worked in various human services positions in PA, OH, IN and NY. He retired from the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center in 2001 after 12 years and volunteered at Elmira Correctional Facility. Rev. Bruce Sandy (MDiv ’77)
- Bruce Sandy, 71, passed peacefully on Jan. 6, 2023, at Hartford Hospital after a long illness. He was born on Nov. 8, 1951, in Worcester Massachusetts, and grew up in New England before attending Gordon Conwell and Andover Newton for his MDiv. He was employed by four churches in the Boston area and five churches in Connecticut; he also provided guidance for 47 years in the ministry. Bruce was a member of TABCON and ABCON; he was on the board of Camp and Conference, Ministry Counsel for the State of CT, and Pierce Baptist Home. He is survived by his sister Cathyann Bearthiaume; three nephews, David and John Bearthiaume, Aaron Hamscon; and two nieces Marina Peck and Carrie Bosch. A fuller obituary can be viewed here.
Edward G. Schrage (MDiv ’75)
- Edward G. Schrage, age 87, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. Edward served in the United State Navy and spent much of his life serving the Lord in many different capacities, and most recently he spoke to many people about the Lord through his prison ministry. Jerry Milton Smith (MDiv ’79)
- Jerry Milton Smith entered the Lord’s presence on November 11, 2022. Jerry worked as an associate pastor, before pursuing a Juris Doctor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. Carroll Edward Smyth (MRE ’72)
- Edward Smyth, 80, went to be with the Lord on March 10, 2024, at his home in Lexington, KY. He served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, receiving an honorable discharge while in seminary. After a time serving churches in the Florida Methodist Conference, he enrolled at Boston University and earned his doctorate. In 1975, he joined the faculty of Seattle Pacific University’s School of Theology, and for 45 years opened his home to college students and small groups of men in discipleship groups. Rev. Dr. Philip Dale Stairs (MTS ’73)
- Rev. Dr. Philip Dale Stairs, 78, entered the Lord’s presence on July 28, 2019. Philip was a faithful pastor for over 50 years serving His Lord and congregations in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Massachusetts and Ontario. Ridley Nortman Usherwood (MDiv ’73)
- Dr. Ridley Nortman Usherwood, 78, devoted husband of Beverly Sue Wood Usherwood, died peacefully at his home on Friday, March 28, 2025. At an early age, he and his family immigrated from Jamaica to England where he was raised. Dr. Usherwood was shaped by a life of global service. Dr. Usherwood served as an Ordained Bishop and a Missionary in the Church of God of Cleveland, TN, a Chaplain (Colonel) in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, a Hospice Counselor, and a Marriage and Family Therapist. Dr. Usherwood also served as a respected Professor who inspired students around the world. His journey spanned continents and touched thousands—from founding seminaries to leading congregations, from building bridges across cultures to shaping the next generation of leaders. Robert James Vetter (MTS ’75)
Rev. Robert J.“Bob” Vetter entered the Lord’s presence Friday, November 6, after a long battle with metastatic melanoma. Bob, a widower, was married to his wife June by Gordon-Conwell President Ockenga. Together they started the Christian Singles Foundation on the North Shore, and also wrote a book on singleness. Later, Bob served in a variety of pastoral positions, was the CEO of the USA World Team Mission Office, and the Vice President of St. Joseph’s Foundation in Southern Pines.
George V. Weston (MDiv ’73)
- George Vincent “G.V.” Weston, age 80, of Essex, passed peacefully in the early hours of April 7, 2025. A devoted husband of nearly 55 years to Elizabeth “Beth” Weston, he was a proud Vietnam veteran, lifelong educator, minister, and active community member. He served in various teaching and leadership roles, including as dean at Lexington Christian Academy and senior coordinator of Gordon’s European seminar. G.V. was known for his warm humor, deep faith, and servant’s heart, volunteering with The Gideons, Young Life, and his beloved First Congregational Church of Essex. Rodney Whitacre (MTS ’76)
- Rodney Alan Whitacre, 73, of Sewickley, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 22, 2023, surrounded by loving family. An avid lover of God’s Word, Rod was director of the New Testament Greek program at Gordon-Conwell before his time as New Testament professor at Trinity School for Ministry. He authored a commentary on the Gospel of John, along with several Greek textbooks, and was a well-loved teacher, counselor and mentor until his retirement in 2015. Rod was also an ordained priest in the Reformed Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, sons and daughter in law, brothers, and grandchildren. A fuller obituary can be viewed here.
Albert Melvin Wright III (MDiv ’78)
- Albert Melvin Wright III “Mel”, 72, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 11, 2024. Mel began his ministry in Clinton, South Carolina, as an associate pastor before accepting the senior pastor position at The First Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina. In 1986, he joined the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) and became the founding pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg before planting a church in Blythewood, South Carolina. After 17 years in full-time ministry, Mel honorably retired from the PCA, obtained his CFP and joined Merrill Lynch as a Wealth Management Advisor in Columbia. He advised and counseled his beloved clients for 28 years, while continuing to serve as an interim pastor in churches around the state. A fuller obituary can be viewed here.
