What Do You Do When No One Is Watching: Counseling & Ethical Mandates

This presentation explores the intersection of professional ethics, personal integrity, and clinical judgment for counselors in their service to the public. While the ACA Code of Ethics provides a roadmap for counselors to practice ethically, the truest test of a counselor’s ethics and character occurs in private moments when they are required to navigate ambiguous dilemmas, manage countertransference, and/or document sensitive session material.
Led by Dr. Vickey L. Maclin, associate professor of counseling at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, participants will be challenged to reflect on and engage in their own personal responsibility as they maintain a professional and ethical stance in their work as counselors.
Learning Outcomes (3 CE Hours)
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify core ethical mandates and the principles from the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) and explain the importance as they serve the public as counselors.
- Articulate reasons as to why it is important to adhere to a responsible process of navigating through gray areas and maintain high professional standards and self-monitoring when providing counseling services.
- Develop and implement a self-monitoring plan that includes a peer-consultation strategy that affords them the opportunity to maintain high ethical standards and prevent professional drift.
