If Christians would wholeheartedly embrace humility, our witness in the world can be radically improved. Humility is often misunderstood, overlooked, or even disparaged. Such is the case today and was also true in the early days of the Jesus movement. However, humility is part of Christ’s self-description (Matthew 11:29) and ought to be an identifier of his followers. Let’s recover Scripture’s presentation of humility, dispel some myths about it, and accept the invitation to live humbly.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Rev. Dr. Dennis R. Edwards is currently Senior Research Faculty at Northern Seminary (Lisle, IL). Until recently, Dr. Edwards was Seminary Dean and Vice President for Church Relations at North Park Theological Seminary, after having previously served as Associate Professor of New Testament. He has nearly four decades of urban pastoral ministry experience and is the author of Humility Illuminated: The Biblical Path Back to Christian Character (IVP), 1 Peter in the Story of God Bible Commentary series (Zondervan), What is the Bible and How Do We Understand It? (Herald Press), Might from the Margins: The Gospel’s Power to Turn the Tables on Injustice (Herald Press), along with several academic essays.

Dr. Davi C. Ribeiro Lin is an assistant professor of Pastoral Theology and Ministry at Gordon-Conwell. His interest in pastoral theology and ministry has been shaped by an interdisciplinary perspective; he is trained in practical theology, counseling psychology, and the pastoral perspective of Augustine of Hippo. Dr. Ribeiro Lin has served for a decade as an evangelical pastor in Brazil, covering a wide range of areas within the church, including preaching, teaching, discipleship, pastoral care, and counseling. He brings a global perspective to the Gordon-Conwell community as an Asian-Latin American pastor who was theologically trained in Europe and South and North America, and specialized in the work of African Bishop Augustine of Hippo. As someone who was raised between two cultures (Brazilian mother and a Taiwanese father), he soon realized how grace and truth were to be cultivated in order to foster unity in diversity, both in family, church, and society.
