Dr. Fairbairn’s Latest Book Explores the Theology of Fifth-Century Gallic Monks
Prolific author and Robert E. Cooley Professor of Early Christianity Dr. Donald Fairbairn published a new book, Christology and the Logic of Grace in Fifth-Century Gaul.
As described by the publisher Oxford University Press, this book “includes translations of, and interaction with, the almost-unknown Christological writings of the fifth-century southern Gallic monks [and] emphasizes the logical sequence by which writers reason from the fall to the incarnation, to grace and salvation.” While these monks were sometimes viewed as semi-Pelagian, Dr. Fairbairn examines how their Christology was rather similar to Augustine’s, affirming “the priority of divine grace in salvation, but [differing] in the way they establish that priority.”
