Gordon-Conwell President-Elect Appoints New Director to Pilot Intercultural Careers Initiative Partnering Graduate-Level Theological Seminary with Undergraduate Universities and Schools
For Immediate Release — Hamilton, MA
Dr. Scott W. Sunquist was named the seventh president of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in October of last year. He begins working full-time for the seminary on the first of April, 2019 in a planned, three-month overlap with the current president, Dr. Dennis P. Hollinger. Dr. Sunquist’s first appointment to the seminary staff is Guinevere McWhorter as the new Director of Innovation through Partnership.
This position is a new role funded by a generous donor to begin researching partnerships between Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and undergraduate universities and schools. The partnership will focus on Christian colleges and historic black colleges and universities. Ms. McWhorter will study how the theological seminary can prepare not only pastors and those in ministry but business majors and other professions with biblical and theological resources to live and work at home and abroad.
“I see so much untapped synergy between theological seminaries and undergraduate programs,” remarked Dr. Sunquist. “We are thrilled to have Gwen at the helm of this new endeavor as we begin to move into new types of seminary partnerships.”
Ms. McWhorter has spent ten years working internationally in cross-cultural contexts. Most recently, she served as an international management consultant in Casablanca, Morocco, a role that took her around Africa working with entrepreneurs. Before that, she worked as the Department Chair and High School English Teacher at an American school in Casablanca, Morocco. She started her career as an English Teacher at an orphanage in the mountains of Morocco.
Ms. McWhorter received a Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies with a focus on Islamic Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, where she worked with Dr. Sunquist in his former role as the Dean of Intercultural Studies. Dr. Sunquist commented, “Nancy and I have known Gwen since her first weeks in graduate study and have followed her career as a student and then a consultant in North Africa. She will bring a deep devotion to Christ and His mission, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a good sense of humor, all which I value.”
Ms. McWhorter is returning to the North Shore of Boston where she received her BA in English Literature and Secondary Education from Gordon College in Wenham, MA.
“After several years overseas, I am delighted to join the staff at Gordon-Conwell. We live in a globalized world that daily increases in diversity and in connectivity. GCTS must boldly step in and carve out new spaces for Christ followers to engage with these new global realities.”
