Biography:
Dr. Ciampa, a native of New England, has taught at Gordon-Conwell continually since 2001, first as a full-time professor (until 2014) and since then as an adjunct professor and Doctor of Ministry mentor. He recently retired to New Hampshire from his position as the S. Louis and Ann W. Armstrong Professor of Religion and chair of the department of biblical and religious studies at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Previous positions include manager for integrated training at American Bible Society’s Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship, professor of New Testament and chair of the division of biblical studies at Gordon-Conwell, and missionary professor of biblical studies in Portugal where he also served as a translator for the Portuguese Bible Society’s contemporary Portuguese translation of the Bible. He is passionate about helping people become careful interpreters of Scripture. He is an ordained Baptist minister and active member of Mountain View Church in Sanbornton, NH.

His understanding of the Scriptures and the faith has been enriched by international experiences, having lectured, trained Bible translators, or ministered in some way, in Angola, Australia, Brazil, Canada, El Salvador, Greece, India, Italy, Kenya, South Korea, Namibia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Russia, Scotland, Thailand, Turkey, and the Vatican, as well as spending time in numerous other countries.

Dr. Ciampa is a member of the Society for New Testament Studies, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Institute for Biblical Research, and the Evangelical Theological Society. He has published two books, The Presence and Function of Scripture in Galatians 1 and 2 (Mohr Siebeck, 1996), and The First Letter to the Corinthians in the Pillar New Testament Commentary series, in addition to dozens of academic essays and articles for publications including the Journal of Biblical LiteratureNew Testament StudiesNovum Testamentum, the Journal of Theological Studies, the Journal for the Study of the New Testament, and others. He currently serves on the editorial board for the The Bible Translator journal.

He is married with two married children and three grandchildren. He enjoys hiking, boating, traveling, attending an occasional musical, studying and teaching about the Bible, and spending time with his wife, his grandchildren, and their parents.
